Tinnitus?
I can clearly feel a thumping sound in my ear, as if my eardrum is beating like a drum.
I once saw a doctor who said it might just be a bacterial infection.
I took medication, but then I caught a cold.
However, during the time I was taking cold medication, the issue with my ear temporarily disappeared.
Later, I recovered from the cold, but recently the symptoms have returned, and the frequency is irregular.
Please help me understand my problem and possible solutions.
Thank you!

More Info
Understanding ear noises and discomfort can be quite challenging, especially when symptoms like a "thumping" sound in the ear persist. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a phenomenon that could be related to several underlying issues, including Eustachian tube dysfunction, middle ear pressure changes, or even residual effects from a previous infection.
Possible Causes of Ear Noises
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure. If this tube is not functioning properly, it can lead to a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear, often accompanied by sounds like popping or thumping. This dysfunction can be triggered by allergies, sinus infections, or even changes in altitude.
2. Middle Ear Infections: You mentioned that a doctor previously diagnosed you with a possible bacterial infection. Middle ear infections (otitis media) can cause fluid buildup, leading to pressure changes and abnormal sounds. Even if the infection resolves, residual fluid may remain, causing ongoing symptoms.
3. Tinnitus: This is a condition characterized by hearing noises that are not caused by external sounds. It can manifest as ringing, buzzing, or thumping sounds. Tinnitus can be associated with hearing loss, exposure to loud noises, or even stress.
4. Barotrauma: If you have experienced rapid changes in altitude (like flying or diving), this can lead to barotrauma, where the pressure in the middle ear does not equalize properly, causing discomfort and unusual sounds.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: Since your symptoms have returned, it would be wise to see an ENT specialist for a thorough examination. They can perform tests to assess your Eustachian tube function, check for fluid in the middle ear, and rule out any other potential issues.
2. Nasal Decongestants or Steroids: If your symptoms are related to allergies or sinus congestion, over-the-counter nasal decongestants or steroid nasal sprays may help reduce inflammation and improve Eustachian tube function.
3. Valsalva Maneuver: This technique involves closing your mouth, pinching your nose shut, and gently blowing to equalize pressure in your ears. It can sometimes help relieve pressure and reduce the thumping sound.
4. Stay Hydrated and Avoid Irritants: Keeping well-hydrated can help thin mucus, making it easier for the Eustachian tube to function properly. Avoiding irritants like smoke or strong odors can also help reduce inflammation.
5. Sound Therapy: If you are experiencing tinnitus, sound therapy or white noise machines can help mask the sounds and make them less noticeable, especially at night.
6. Follow-Up Care: If your symptoms persist or worsen, follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further testing, such as audiometry or tympanometry, to assess your hearing and middle ear function.
Conclusion
In summary, the thumping sound you are experiencing in your ear could be due to Eustachian tube dysfunction, residual effects from a previous infection, or other factors. It is essential to consult with an ENT specialist for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan. In the meantime, practicing techniques to equalize ear pressure and managing any underlying allergies or infections can help alleviate your symptoms. Remember, timely intervention is key to preventing further complications and ensuring your ear health.
