Tinnitus?
Recently, I have been experiencing a popping sound in my ear whenever I exert pressure, which is quite bothersome.
Could this be due to earwax? Will it come out on its own?
Hsin, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/02
Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello: It is possible that there is a small amount of earwax inside, which may not easily come out due to the angle.
If discomfort persists, you may want to visit an otolaryngology clinic for an examination.
Wishing you safety and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
Understanding ear noises, particularly the "clicking" or "popping" sounds you describe, can be quite perplexing and often indicates an underlying issue related to the ear's anatomy or function. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a sensation that could be linked to several factors, including earwax buildup, Eustachian tube dysfunction, or even issues related to the middle ear.
Potential Causes of Ear Noises
1. Earwax Buildup: One of the most common causes of ear noises is the accumulation of earwax (cerumen). When earwax becomes impacted, it can create pressure against the eardrum, leading to sensations of fullness, popping, or clicking sounds when you move your jaw or apply pressure to your ears. Earwax can sometimes dislodge on its own, but if it is significantly impacted, it may require professional removal.
2. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure. If this tube does not open properly, it can lead to a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, along with noises when swallowing or yawning. This dysfunction can be caused by allergies, colds, sinus infections, or changes in altitude.
3. Middle Ear Issues: Conditions such as otitis media (middle ear infection) can also lead to noises in the ear. This is often accompanied by other symptoms like pain, hearing loss, or fluid drainage. If you have had recent upper respiratory infections, this could be a contributing factor.
4. Muscle Spasms: Sometimes, involuntary muscle contractions in the middle ear can create sounds that resemble clicking or popping. This is less common but can occur in some individuals.
Solutions and Recommendations
- Self-Care for Earwax: If you suspect earwax buildup, you can try using over-the-counter ear drops designed to soften wax. However, avoid using cotton swabs, as they can push wax further into the ear canal.
- Eustachian Tube Exercises: To help with Eustachian tube dysfunction, you can perform maneuvers such as the Valsalva maneuver (pinching your nose and gently blowing) or swallowing while holding your nose. These can help equalize pressure in the ears.
- Stay Hydrated and Use Decongestants: If your symptoms are related to allergies or sinus congestion, staying hydrated and using over-the-counter decongestants may provide relief.
- Consult a Specialist: If the noises persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including checking for earwax buildup, assessing your Eustachian tube function, and ruling out any other potential issues.
Conclusion
In summary, the clicking or popping sounds in your ear could be due to several factors, including earwax buildup or Eustachian tube dysfunction. While some cases may resolve on their own, persistent symptoms warrant a visit to a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation. It is essential to address these issues, especially if they interfere with your daily life or hearing, as you mentioned you find them quite bothersome. Taking proactive steps to understand and manage your ear health will help you maintain optimal auditory function and comfort.
