There is an unknown fluid being discharged after urination?
Hello, Doctor Hsieh: About five days ago, I drank a little less water and held my urine.
After holding it in, I noticed an unclear, thick white liquid being expelled along with a burning sensation.
Over the past few days, sometimes after using the restroom, a sticky, stringy, transparent fluid has been flowing out, which has an unusual odor similar to semen.
Could this be a prostate issue? Or could it be related to insufficient water intake and irregular sleep patterns? Should I see a doctor, or is there something I should just pay attention to? Thank you for your help, Doctor.

Hello, you may be experiencing urethritis.
It is advisable to drink plenty of water and consider using cranberry products.

More Info
It sounds like you're experiencing some concerning symptoms after urination, including the discharge of a thick, white, sticky fluid, a burning sensation, and a subsequent clear, stringy discharge with an unusual odor. These symptoms can indeed be indicative of a prostate issue, but they may also be related to other factors such as hydration levels, urinary habits, or even infections.
First, let's address the potential connection to prostate health. The prostate gland is responsible for producing a significant portion of the fluid that makes up semen. If there is inflammation or infection in the prostate, known as prostatitis, it can lead to various symptoms, including painful urination, discharge, and changes in the consistency or odor of the fluid expelled. Chronic prostatitis, which can be non-bacterial, may cause ongoing discomfort and unusual discharge patterns.
The burning sensation you mentioned could suggest irritation of the urethra, which might be due to inflammation, infection, or even dehydration. When you drink less water, your urine becomes more concentrated, which can irritate the urinary tract and lead to discomfort. Additionally, holding in urine for extended periods can also contribute to urinary tract issues, as it may lead to increased pressure and irritation.
The presence of a clear, sticky discharge after urination, especially if it resembles semen, could be a sign of prostatic fluid being expelled. However, if this discharge has an unusual odor, it may indicate an underlying infection or other issue that requires medical attention.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist, who can perform a thorough evaluation. They may recommend tests such as a urinalysis, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, or even imaging studies to assess the prostate's condition. It's essential to rule out any infections, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which could also cause similar symptoms.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help manage your symptoms:
1. Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Proper hydration can help dilute your urine, reducing irritation in the urinary tract.
2. Avoid Irritants: Limit consumption of caffeine, alcohol, and spicy foods, as these can irritate the bladder and exacerbate symptoms.
3. Practice Good Urinary Habits: Try to urinate regularly and avoid holding it in for long periods. This can help prevent bladder overdistension and irritation.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in your symptoms, including the frequency and nature of the discharge, as well as any associated pain or discomfort.
5. Seek Medical Attention: If your symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by fever, chills, or significant pain, seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to prostate issues, they could also stem from other factors such as dehydration or urinary habits. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment. Don't hesitate to reach out for medical advice, as early intervention can often lead to better outcomes.
