Left lower abdominal discomfort and pain?

Hello doctor, I often experience a dull pain in my lower left abdomen for no apparent reason.
When I go to the bathroom, I frequently pass gas, and after doing so, the pain subsides.
This has been ongoing for quite some time.
Could you please explain why this is happening?

Mei, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/04

Dr. Lin Minghui reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

It may be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which is related to diet, stress, emotions, and gastrointestinal function.
It is recommended to eat slowly and avoid talking while eating.
Limit the intake of gas-producing foods, as well as spicy foods and beverages.
Engage in moderate exercise and establish good bowel habits.
If symptoms persist and there is weight loss, it is advisable to seek medical attention at an outpatient clinic.
Wishing you good health, Dr.
Lin Ming-Hui.

Left lower abdominal discomfort can be a perplexing issue, as it may stem from a variety of causes. Your description of experiencing a dull pain that often resolves after passing gas suggests that the discomfort may be related to gastrointestinal issues, particularly those involving gas accumulation or bowel function.

One of the primary reasons for left lower abdominal pain, especially if it is accompanied by a sensation of bloating or gas, could be related to the colon, specifically the sigmoid colon, which is located in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen. Conditions such as diverticulitis, which is inflammation of small pouches (diverticula) that can form in the walls of the colon, may lead to localized pain and discomfort. This condition can sometimes be exacerbated by dietary factors, such as a low-fiber diet, which can lead to constipation and increased pressure in the colon.

Another potential cause of your symptoms could be functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is characterized by symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, including gas and bloating. Stress and certain foods can trigger these symptoms, leading to discomfort that may feel relieved after passing gas or having a bowel movement.

Additionally, it is important to consider other gastrointestinal issues such as constipation or even food intolerances, which can lead to gas buildup and discomfort. If you have noticed any patterns related to your diet or stress levels that coincide with your symptoms, it may be worthwhile to keep a food diary to identify potential triggers.

While you mentioned that the pain resolves after passing gas, which suggests a non-serious issue, it is still essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the discomfort persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as significant changes in bowel habits, weight loss, fever, or blood in the stool, it would be prudent to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend diagnostic tests, such as imaging studies or a colonoscopy, to rule out more serious conditions.

In summary, left lower abdominal discomfort that is relieved by passing gas is often related to gastrointestinal issues, particularly those involving the colon. Conditions such as diverticulitis, IBS, or functional gastrointestinal disorders could be contributing factors. Keeping track of your symptoms and any dietary or lifestyle factors that may influence them can provide valuable information for your healthcare provider. If your symptoms persist or change, do not hesitate to seek medical advice for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management.
