Can you get pregnant if you have intercourse during your menstrual period?
Doctor, I started my period on December 29.
On the morning of January 3, I thought it had ended, but in the afternoon, I had intercourse with my boyfriend without a condom and there was no ejaculation inside.
However, after we finished, we turned on the light and noticed a significant amount of blood on the sheets, indicating that my period seemed to still be ongoing...
(As of today, January 5, there is still a little bit left.) After we had intercourse that day, we both quickly took a shower and cleaned up...
I'm wondering if there's a chance I could be pregnant? I'm really anxious...
Ginny, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/05

Hello, if you are certain that the bleeding from December 12 to 29 is a normal menstrual period, then you are not likely pregnant.
However, if you are unsure whether it is a normal cycle, it is better to get checked.
Vaginal bleeding is not always indicative of menstruation; some individuals may mistake early pregnancy bleeding for a menstrual period, and pregnancy cannot be determined solely based on subjective symptoms.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Engaging in sexual intercourse during your menstrual period can lead to some confusion regarding the possibility of pregnancy. While it is less likely to conceive during menstruation, it is not impossible. To understand this better, let’s break down the menstrual cycle and the factors that influence fertility.
The menstrual cycle typically lasts about 28 days, although it can vary from person to person. It is divided into several phases: the menstrual phase (when bleeding occurs), the follicular phase (when the body prepares for ovulation), ovulation (when an egg is released), and the luteal phase (when the body prepares for a potential pregnancy). Ovulation usually occurs around the midpoint of the cycle, which is typically about 14 days after the first day of your last period.
Sperm can live inside a woman's body for up to five days, and if you have a shorter menstrual cycle, ovulation could occur shortly after your period ends. This means that if you have unprotected sex at the end of your period, there is a chance that sperm could still be viable when you ovulate, leading to a potential pregnancy.
In your case, you mentioned having intercourse on January 3rd, shortly after your period started on December 29th. If your cycle is typically around 28 days, you would likely ovulate around January 12th. Given that sperm can survive for several days, it is indeed possible, albeit not highly probable, that you could conceive from intercourse that occurred just after your period.
Additionally, the presence of blood during intercourse can sometimes be concerning. It is important to note that menstrual blood is not harmful, and many couples engage in sexual activity during this time without issues. However, if the bleeding is unusually heavy or accompanied by pain, it may be wise to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions.
If you are anxious about the possibility of pregnancy, consider taking a home pregnancy test if your next period is late. Most tests are reliable about a week after a missed period. If you find yourself frequently worried about pregnancy, it may be beneficial to discuss contraceptive options with your healthcare provider to find a method that works for you and your partner.
In summary, while the likelihood of getting pregnant during your period is lower, it is not impossible. If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle, fertility, or sexual health, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your individual circumstances.
