Retinal repair surgery
Hello, Doctor Gao.
I recently underwent retinal laser surgery, and the doctor mentioned that around two hundred laser shots were administered.
Does this indicate that the area of the condition is quite extensive? I found online that others typically receive only a few dozen shots, and my corrected vision is now 0.8.
I'm really worried.
The doctor even told me that 0.8 is considered normal.
What does that mean?

Hello: More than two hundred times is very common, and a range of several hundred shots is normal.
A few dozen shots are relatively rare.
Peripheral laser treatment usually has little impact on vision, as vision quality primarily depends on the macula.
At the E-Hospital in Puzi, Taiwan, the ophthalmology department is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
We hope to have the opportunity to serve you.
Gao Pi-Lin.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding your recent retinal laser surgery and the implications of a vision measurement of 0.8. It’s understandable to feel concerned about your vision, especially after undergoing a significant procedure like retinal laser surgery.
Firstly, let’s clarify what a vision measurement of 0.8 means. In many countries, including the United States, visual acuity is often expressed as a fraction, with 20/20 vision being considered normal. A measurement of 0.8 typically corresponds to approximately 20/25 vision, which means you can see at 20 feet what a person with normal vision can see at 25 feet. While this is slightly below the standard of 20/20, it is still considered functional vision for most daily activities.
Regarding your concern about the number of laser applications (over 200), it’s important to understand that the number of laser shots can vary significantly depending on the extent of the retinal issue being treated. Some patients may require only a few laser applications, while others with more extensive retinal damage or conditions may need more. The key is that your ophthalmologist has determined that this was necessary for your specific condition.
The fact that your doctor indicated that a vision of 0.8 is acceptable suggests that they believe your vision is within a reasonable range post-surgery, especially considering the complexity of your case. It’s essential to remember that visual recovery can take time, and many factors can influence the final outcome, including the underlying condition that necessitated the surgery, the healing process, and individual variations in recovery.
If you are experiencing anxiety about your vision, it’s crucial to communicate this with your ophthalmologist. They can provide reassurance and explain the expected timeline for recovery. They may also conduct further assessments to ensure that your eyes are healing properly and that there are no complications from the surgery.
In terms of what you can do moving forward, maintaining regular follow-up appointments with your eye doctor is vital. They will monitor your vision and the health of your retina, ensuring that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Additionally, protecting your eyes from strain and ensuring you follow any post-operative care instructions will aid in your recovery.
Lastly, if you have specific concerns about your vision or the number of laser treatments you received, don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion from another ophthalmologist. This can provide you with additional perspectives and peace of mind regarding your treatment and recovery process.
In summary, a vision of 0.8 post-retinal laser surgery is generally considered acceptable, though it may not be perfect. The number of laser applications can vary widely based on individual circumstances. Regular follow-up care and open communication with your eye doctor are essential for ensuring the best possible outcome for your vision.
