Dull discomfort in the upper left abdomen with slight pain upon pressing below the left rib cage?

Hello, doctor.
After having breakfast on Sunday, I felt a slight pain when pressing under my left rib cage.
The next day, I started to feel a dull ache in the upper left abdomen, between my chest and belly button.
When I lie down and then try to get up, or when I exert my abdominal muscles, it feels like I've done too many sit-ups in the upper left abdomen.
I have type 1 diabetes and, due to my job, I often sit and rarely exercise.
Doctor, could there be any issues with this?

Hsu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/06

Hello, regarding gastrointestinal diseases, the discomfort in that area may be related to gastric issues, but it is usually accompanied by acid reflux or belching.
Otherwise, consider chicken muscle membrane pain.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the discomfort in your left upper abdomen. Based on your description, there are several potential causes for the symptoms you are experiencing, particularly given your medical history of Type 1 diabetes and a sedentary lifestyle.

Firstly, the left upper abdomen houses several important organs, including the stomach, spleen, pancreas, and parts of the colon. Discomfort in this area can often be attributed to gastrointestinal issues such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, or even issues related to the spleen or pancreas. Given that you mentioned a sensation similar to that of overexertion (like doing too many sit-ups), it could indicate muscle strain or tension in the abdominal wall, especially if you have been less active recently.

Additionally, diabetes can complicate abdominal symptoms. Diabetic patients may experience gastrointestinal motility issues, which can lead to symptoms like bloating, discomfort, or pain. It's also important to consider that diabetes can increase the risk of certain conditions, such as pancreatitis, which could manifest as left upper abdominal pain.

Another aspect to consider is the possibility of referred pain. Sometimes, issues in the heart or lungs can present as abdominal discomfort, particularly if there are underlying conditions that may not be immediately apparent. However, given your specific symptoms and location of pain, this is less likely but still worth mentioning.

Since you have a history of being sedentary, it’s crucial to evaluate whether lifestyle factors are contributing to your discomfort. Regular physical activity can improve overall health, assist in weight management, and enhance gastrointestinal function. Incorporating even moderate exercise, such as walking or stretching, could alleviate some of the discomfort you are feeling.

Given the duration and nature of your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests, and possibly imaging studies (like an ultrasound or CT scan) to rule out any serious underlying conditions. They may also assess your diabetes management, as optimal control of blood sugar levels can significantly impact your overall health and well-being.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for your left upper abdominal discomfort, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation. They can provide a tailored approach to your symptoms, taking into account your diabetes and lifestyle factors. Early intervention can help prevent complications and improve your quality of life.

Take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
