Green Discharge and Delayed Period: What You Need to Know - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Green discharge

I haven't had my period in December, and now it's already January.
My discharge is green (it was like this before but wasn't a problem), but recently there have been some blood streaks in the discharge.
I initially thought my period was about to start, but it still hasn't come.
I don't consider myself to have had sexual experience (there was no penetration), and I always used protection.

Hello: (1) Green discharge is generally caused by a bacterial infection; however, trichomoniasis and even candidiasis can sometimes also appear green.
Therefore, it is advisable to perform a vaginal secretion microscopy examination for better differential diagnosis.
(2) When menstruation is delayed, there may be blood-tinged discharge, and it is important to rule out bleeding due to pregnancy.
If pregnancy is excluded, it is likely just a menstrual irregularity, which can be treated with hormone therapy.

More Info

When it comes to understanding green discharge and a delayed period, there are several factors to consider. The presence of green discharge, especially when accompanied by blood, can be concerning and warrants further investigation. Here’s a comprehensive overview of potential causes and recommendations for what you should do next.

Possible Causes of Green Discharge
1. Infection: One of the most common reasons for a change in vaginal discharge color is an infection. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as trichomoniasis can lead to greenish discharge. BV is characterized by an imbalance in the normal bacteria found in the vagina, while trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite. Both conditions can cause unusual discharge and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, burning, or a fishy odor.

2. Hormonal Imbalance: A delayed period can be attributed to hormonal fluctuations. Stress, significant weight changes, or underlying health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can disrupt your menstrual cycle. Hormonal imbalances can also affect the consistency and color of vaginal discharge.

3. Pregnancy: Although you mentioned not having penetrative sexual experience, it’s important to consider that pregnancy can occur even with condom use if there was any genital contact. Early pregnancy can sometimes cause changes in discharge, including color changes.

4. Cervical or Uterine Issues: Conditions such as cervical polyps or infections can lead to abnormal discharge. If there is bleeding in addition to the green discharge, it could indicate an issue that requires medical attention.

Recommendations for Further Action
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the combination of delayed menstruation, green discharge, and the presence of blood, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam and possibly laboratory tests to identify any infections or other underlying conditions.

2. Testing: Your doctor may recommend tests such as a Pap smear, STI screening, or a vaginal swab to determine the cause of the discharge. These tests can help rule out infections or other issues that may require treatment.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms you may experience, such as pain, itching, or changes in the discharge's odor. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

4. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it’s easy to search for symptoms online, self-diagnosing can lead to unnecessary anxiety or misinterpretation of your symptoms. It’s best to rely on professional medical advice.

Conclusion
In summary, green discharge accompanied by a delayed period and blood can be indicative of various conditions, ranging from infections to hormonal imbalances. It’s essential to seek medical attention to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure your reproductive health is maintained. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing these symptoms promptly is the best course of action.
