Excessive secretion?
I previously had a Candida infection, but after having intercourse on December 27, I experienced itching in the genital area four days later, along with an increase in discharge.
The discharge is colorless and odorless, with occasional small clumps of cottage cheese-like discharge.
Applying the ointment prescribed during my previous clinic visit provided some relief, but the discharge is still more than usual (colorless and odorless).
It is gradually decreasing now.
Is this normal?

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the treatment for vaginal candidiasis primarily involves the use of suppositories and topical creams.
If there is no improvement with continued treatment, it is advisable to consult a physician for further examinations, such as microscopic examination of secretions and culture tests.
For patients with drug resistance and recurrent infections, oral medications may also be used.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Increased vaginal discharge can be a common concern for many women, and understanding its causes and implications is essential for maintaining reproductive health. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced an increase in discharge following a history of a yeast infection, which can often lead to confusion regarding what is normal and what may indicate a potential issue.
Firstly, it's important to note that vaginal discharge can vary significantly throughout the menstrual cycle. Normal discharge is typically clear or milky, odorless, and may increase during ovulation or in response to hormonal changes. The presence of small clumps of discharge that resemble cottage cheese can be indicative of a yeast infection, especially if accompanied by itching or irritation. However, since you mentioned that the discharge is mostly colorless and odorless, this could suggest that your body is simply responding to hormonal fluctuations or other benign factors.
The fact that you have experienced an increase in discharge after sexual intercourse could also be related to several factors. Sexual activity can stimulate the vaginal glands, leading to increased lubrication and discharge. Additionally, if there was any irritation or minor trauma during intercourse, this could also contribute to a temporary increase in discharge as the body works to heal and maintain its natural flora.
Regarding your previous yeast infection, it's not uncommon for women to experience recurrent symptoms, especially if there are underlying factors such as hormonal imbalances, stress, or changes in diet. The use of topical treatments, as you mentioned, can provide temporary relief, but it’s crucial to ensure that the underlying cause is addressed to prevent recurrence.
As for your current situation, if the discharge is gradually decreasing and you are not experiencing any significant discomfort, it may be a sign that your body is returning to its normal state. However, if you notice any changes such as a strong odor, a change in color to yellow or green, or if the discharge becomes accompanied by pain or significant itching, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation. These symptoms could indicate a bacterial infection or another type of vaginitis that may require specific treatment.
In summary, while increased vaginal discharge can be concerning, it is often a normal physiological response. Monitoring your symptoms and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring your reproductive health. If you have any doubts or if the symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step. Regular gynecological check-ups can also help in early detection and management of any potential issues.
