Eye problems
Hello, I'm not sure if this is an eye issue.
Recently, I often wake up suddenly in the middle of my sleep.
I realize that my eyes are closed, but I see many strange things.
It's hard to describe, but there are many bizarre shapes moving around.
Sometimes I see a mass of blood vessels, mostly yellow with some green.
However, as soon as I open my eyes and then close them again, it disappears.
What could this situation be? I'm quite scared because some of the shapes are frightening, and it's unsettling to see them with my eyes closed.
Thank you.

Hello, based on my experience, it is likely that you are seeing images of your own retinal blood vessels (as I have experienced as well).
This is normal and there is no need to worry.

Understanding visual disturbances, especially when they occur during states of partial consciousness, such as when you're waking up or falling asleep, can be quite perplexing and sometimes alarming. The experiences you describe—seeing strange shapes or colors while your eyes are closed—are not uncommon and can be attributed to several physiological and neurological phenomena.
Firstly, what you are experiencing could be related to a phenomenon known as hypnagogic hallucinations. These are vivid visual, auditory, or tactile sensations that occur as one is falling asleep. They can be quite realistic and may include seeing shapes, colors, or even hearing sounds. Conversely, hypnopompic hallucinations occur upon waking and can also involve similar experiences. Both types of hallucinations are generally harmless and are often associated with sleep deprivation, irregular sleep patterns, or stress.
The strange shapes and colors you see, such as the yellow and green blood vessels, might be a form of visual snow or entoptic phenomena. Entoptic phenomena are visual effects whose source is within the eye itself. For instance, when you close your eyes, you might see patterns or colors due to the activity of the retinal cells, which can sometimes be perceived as moving shapes or colors. This is a normal response of the visual system and is usually not a cause for concern.
Another aspect to consider is the role of visual processing in the brain. When your eyes are closed, your brain continues to process visual information, albeit in a different way than when your eyes are open. This can lead to the perception of images or colors that are not actually present in the external environment. The brain's interpretation of sensory input can sometimes create vivid and unusual visual experiences, especially if you are in a state of altered consciousness, such as just waking up or falling asleep.
While these experiences can be unsettling, they are typically benign. However, if you find that these visual disturbances are frequent, distressing, or accompanied by other symptoms (such as headaches, significant changes in vision, or other neurological symptoms), it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. An eye specialist or a neurologist can help determine if there are any underlying conditions that need to be addressed.
In summary, the visual disturbances you are experiencing when your eyes are closed are likely related to normal physiological processes associated with sleep and wakefulness. They can be attributed to hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations, entoptic phenomena, or the brain's ongoing visual processing. While these experiences are usually harmless, staying aware of your overall health and seeking medical advice if symptoms persist or worsen is always a good practice.
