Star, 18 years old, female.
A hard lump has appeared under her right armpit a few days ago, and it does not move.
A: A hard, immobile lump is more indicative of a malignant characteristic, while a soft, movable lump is more suggestive of a benign characteristic.
Although the likelihood of malignancy at 18 years old is low, there is still a possibility of it being malignant.
Please visit a hospital or clinic for a physician to conduct a physical examination to determine if it is indeed hard and immobile.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Experiencing a painful hard lump under the right armpit can be concerning, and it’s important to consider various potential causes. The armpit area, or axilla, contains a number of structures including lymph nodes, blood vessels, nerves, and fatty tissue. When a lump appears in this area, it can be due to several reasons, and understanding these can help guide you toward the appropriate next steps.
1. Lymphadenopathy: One of the most common causes of a lump in the armpit is swollen lymph nodes, known as lymphadenopathy. This can occur due to infections (such as a cold or flu), localized infections (like an infected hair follicle or abscess), or systemic conditions (like mononucleosis or HIV). The lymph nodes can become enlarged and tender as they work to filter out pathogens.
2. Cysts: A sebaceous cyst or an epidermoid cyst can develop in the armpit area. These are typically benign and can feel firm or hard. They may become painful if they become inflamed or infected.
3. Lipoma: A lipoma is a benign tumor made of fatty tissue. These are usually soft, movable lumps under the skin, but in some cases, they can feel firmer and may cause discomfort if they press on surrounding tissues.
4. Infections: Conditions such as abscesses or cellulitis can cause painful lumps in the armpit. An abscess is a localized collection of pus that can occur due to bacterial infection, while cellulitis is a more diffuse infection of the skin and underlying tissues.
5. Hidradenitis Suppurativa: This is a chronic skin condition that causes lumps under the skin, often in areas where skin rubs together, such as the armpits. It can lead to painful, swollen lumps that may drain pus.
6. Tumors: Although less common, both benign and malignant tumors can occur in the axillary region. If the lump is hard, fixed, and associated with other symptoms (like weight loss, night sweats, or fever), it is essential to seek medical evaluation.
7. Muscle Strain: Sometimes, pain in the armpit area can be referred from muscle strain or injury in the shoulder or upper back. This may not necessarily present as a lump but can cause discomfort in the region.
Given the variety of potential causes, it is crucial to monitor the lump closely. If it persists, increases in size, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or significant pain, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies (like an ultrasound) or a biopsy to determine the nature of the lump.
In the meantime, you can manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers, applying warm compresses to the area, and avoiding any activities that exacerbate the pain. However, these measures are not substitutes for professional medical evaluation and treatment.
In summary, while a hard lump under the armpit can arise from various benign conditions, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes, especially if the lump is related to an underlying condition that requires treatment.
