Hearing loss in the left ear?

Hello, doctor! Recently, my family helped me clean my ears.
After cleaning both ears, I noticed that the sound in my left ear is significantly less clear than in my right ear.
Additionally, when I chew, I hear a muffled thumping sound in my left ear, while the sounds in my right ear are much clearer.
This issue has persisted for three days without any signs of improvement.
What should I do to effectively improve this situation? Thank you!

Hello: It is possible that cleaning your ears may push the earwax further inside.
If there is no improvement, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngology clinic or hospital for examination.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing some concerning symptoms with your left ear, including a noticeable difference in hearing clarity compared to your right ear, as well as a muffled sound when biting or chewing. These symptoms can be quite distressing, and it's important to understand the potential causes and solutions.

Possible Causes of Left Ear Hearing Loss
1. Earwax Impaction: One of the most common causes of sudden hearing loss or muffled hearing is earwax buildup. If your family member used a cotton swab or other object to clean your ears, it’s possible that they inadvertently pushed wax deeper into the ear canal, leading to impaction. This can block sound waves from reaching the eardrum effectively.

2. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube helps equalize pressure in the middle ear. If it becomes blocked or does not function properly, it can lead to a feeling of fullness or muffled hearing. This can occur due to allergies, colds, or sinus infections.

3. Middle Ear Issues: Conditions such as otitis media (middle ear infection) can cause fluid buildup, leading to hearing loss. Symptoms may include ear pain, pressure, or a feeling of fullness in the ear.

4. Acoustic Trauma: If you were exposed to loud noises or sudden pressure changes, it could potentially affect your hearing.

5. Other Medical Conditions: In rare cases, more serious conditions such as sudden sensorineural hearing loss or issues with the auditory nerve may be at play.

Recommended Actions
1. Avoid Further Cleaning: Do not attempt to clean your ears further, especially with cotton swabs, as this can worsen the situation by pushing wax deeper or causing injury.

2. Consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: Given that your symptoms have persisted for three days without improvement, it’s advisable to see an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including an otoscopic exam to check for wax buildup or signs of infection, and possibly a hearing test to assess the extent of your hearing loss.

3. Home Remedies: If you suspect earwax buildup, you might consider using over-the-counter ear drops designed to soften earwax. However, consult with a healthcare provider before using any home remedies, especially if you have a history of ear problems.

4. Stay Hydrated and Manage Allergies: If you have allergies or a cold, staying hydrated and using antihistamines may help alleviate Eustachian tube dysfunction.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms such as pain, discharge, or dizziness, and report these to your doctor, as they can provide important clues to your condition.

Prevention Tips
- Avoid Inserting Objects into the Ear: Regularly cleaning your ears with cotton swabs can lead to impaction. Instead, let the ear's natural cleaning process work or consult a professional for cleaning.

- Manage Allergies and Sinus Issues: If you have allergies, managing them effectively can help prevent Eustachian tube dysfunction.

- Protect Your Ears: If you are exposed to loud noises, consider using ear protection to prevent acoustic trauma.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may be due to something as simple as earwax buildup, it’s crucial to seek professional evaluation to rule out any serious conditions. Prompt attention can help prevent further complications and improve your hearing. Take care, and I hope you find relief soon!
