Bartholin's cyst issue
Hello, doctor.
I have a growth near my vulva that looks like a sarcoma, and it has been there for quite some time.
However, it doesn't seem to have grown much.
I previously consulted a doctor who said it was nothing to worry about.
Later, I found online that applying warm compresses daily might help it go away, but it doesn't seem to be working.
I'm really worried that it might worsen over time.
Is there any solution?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
It is recommended to first consult a physician for an examination to confirm what the mass resembling a sarcoma actually is, before deciding on the treatment.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
A Bartholin cyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms when the Bartholin glands, located on either side of the vaginal opening, become blocked. These glands are responsible for secreting fluid that helps lubricate the vagina. When the duct of a Bartholin gland becomes obstructed, fluid accumulates, leading to the formation of a cyst. While these cysts are generally benign and may not cause any symptoms, they can sometimes become painful or infected.
Symptoms of Bartholin Cyst
Most Bartholin cysts are asymptomatic and may go unnoticed. However, if the cyst becomes large or infected, you may experience:
1. Pain or Discomfort: This can occur in the area of the cyst, especially during sexual intercourse or when sitting.
2. Swelling: The cyst may appear as a lump near the vaginal opening.
3. Redness and Warmth: If the cyst becomes infected, the area may become red, warm, and tender.
4. Fever: In cases of infection, systemic symptoms like fever may occur.
Treatment Options
1. Observation: If the cyst is small and asymptomatic, many healthcare providers recommend a watchful waiting approach. Regular monitoring can help ensure that any changes are noted.
2. Sitz Baths: Warm sitz baths can help alleviate discomfort and may promote drainage if the cyst is small. This involves sitting in a few inches of warm water for about 15-20 minutes several times a day.
3. Drainage: If the cyst becomes painful or infected, a healthcare provider may perform a procedure to drain it. This can be done in the office and typically involves making a small incision to allow the fluid to escape.
4. Marsupialization: For recurrent cysts, a procedure called marsupialization may be recommended. This involves creating a small pouch by suturing the edges of the cyst wall to the surrounding tissue, allowing it to drain continuously.
5. Antibiotics: If there is an infection, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection.
Concerns and Considerations
While Bartholin cysts are usually harmless, it is essential to monitor any changes in size, shape, or symptoms. If you notice significant changes, increased pain, or signs of infection (such as fever or pus), it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
Additionally, if you are concerned about the cyst's appearance or if it is causing significant discomfort, discussing your options with a healthcare provider can provide peace of mind and appropriate management.
In summary, while Bartholin cysts are often benign and may not require treatment, it is essential to stay vigilant about any changes. Regular check-ups with your healthcare provider can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed early. If home remedies like warm compresses are not effective, do not hesitate to seek professional medical advice for further evaluation and treatment options.
