Eye discomfort

Hello doctor, I have been experiencing visual disturbances after using my phone in the dark.
I see small, dense white dots when looking at things, but my vision is clear when I go outside.
However, in dim light or with my eyes closed, the same issue persists.
I have also rested my eyes for two weeks, but the problem remains.
When I close my eyes, I can still see two dark circles and a white light.
Could you please explain what is happening with my eyes? Thank you.

Ni, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/17

Hello, it seems like you are experiencing symptoms of floaters.
It might be a good idea to have your retina examined.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns about your eye health. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing visual disturbances that could be related to several factors, including eye strain, potential retinal issues, or even the effects of prolonged screen time in low light conditions.

From what you've described, it sounds like you are seeing small white dots or flashes, especially in low light or when you close your eyes. This phenomenon could be related to a few different conditions. One possibility is that you are experiencing visual snow, a condition where individuals see what appears to be static or "snow" in their visual field. This can be exacerbated by eye strain or fatigue, particularly after extended periods of screen use in dim lighting.

Another potential cause could be related to the vitreous humor in your eye. As we age, the vitreous gel can begin to shrink and pull away from the retina, which can lead to the perception of floaters or flashes of light. This is often harmless but can sometimes indicate more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments, especially if accompanied by other symptoms like sudden vision changes or a curtain-like shadow over your vision.

You mentioned that you have taken a break from using your eyes intensively for two weeks, which is a good step. However, if you are still experiencing these symptoms, it is crucial to seek a comprehensive eye examination from an ophthalmologist. They can perform tests such as a dilated eye exam to assess the health of your retina and vitreous, as well as check for any signs of retinal detachment or other underlying issues.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help alleviate eye strain and improve your visual comfort:
1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: For every 20 minutes of screen time, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This helps reduce eye fatigue.

2. Adjust Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce glare on screens. Avoid using screens in complete darkness, as this can strain your eyes.

3. Blink Regularly: When staring at screens, people tend to blink less, which can lead to dryness and discomfort. Make a conscious effort to blink more often.

4. Use Artificial Tears: If you experience dryness, consider using over-the-counter artificial tears to keep your eyes lubricated.

5. Limit Screen Time: Try to reduce the amount of time spent on screens, especially in low light conditions. Engage in activities that do not require screen use, such as reading physical books or spending time outdoors.

6. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help maintain overall eye health.

7. Wear Protective Eyewear: If you spend a lot of time on screens, consider blue light blocking glasses to reduce potential strain.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to consult with an eye care professional. They can provide a tailored diagnosis and treatment plan based on your specific situation. Remember, taking care of your eyes is crucial, and early intervention can prevent more serious issues down the line. Wishing you the best for your eye health!
