Post-operative swelling after double eyelid surgery?
Hello doctor, today is the 28th day after my double eyelid surgery, but there is still some swelling.
I went for a follow-up at the clinic, and the doctor advised me to continue with warm compresses, but the effect is not very noticeable.
I’ve read online that the time for swelling to subside varies for each person, and some people take longer.
However, the clinic doctor said that it will take about a month and a half to settle, and the swelling will not go down any further.
Is that true? I want to get swelling-reducing injections; where can I go for that? (This doctor does not provide swelling-reducing injections.)

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery
Postoperative swelling injections are not the appropriate treatment; maintaining a normal routine and allowing the swelling to subside gradually is sufficient.

Post-eyelid surgery swelling is a common concern for many patients, and it’s understandable to feel anxious about the duration and management of this swelling. After eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, it is typical for patients to experience some degree of swelling and bruising as part of the healing process.
In your case, being 28 days post-surgery and still noticing some swelling is not unusual. The healing timeline can vary significantly from person to person due to several factors, including individual healing responses, the extent of the surgery performed, and adherence to post-operative care instructions. While some patients may see significant improvement within the first few weeks, others may take longer to fully recover.
Typically, the initial swelling tends to peak within the first few days after surgery and gradually subsides over the following weeks. Most surgeons will inform their patients that while significant swelling should diminish within the first month, residual swelling can persist for several weeks or even months. It is not uncommon for the final results to take up to six months to fully manifest, as the tissues continue to heal and settle.
Regarding your doctor's statement that the swelling should stabilize around six weeks post-surgery, this is generally accurate. However, it is essential to understand that some minor swelling may still be present beyond this period, and it can take time for the skin to fully retract and adjust to the new contour of the eyelids.
If you are considering receiving a "swelling reduction injection," commonly referred to as a corticosteroid injection, it is crucial to consult with a qualified medical professional who specializes in post-operative care. These injections can help reduce inflammation and swelling, but they should only be administered by a licensed practitioner who understands the nuances of eyelid surgery recovery. If your current surgeon does not provide this service, you may want to seek a consultation with another board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist who has experience in post-operative care for eyelid surgery.
In the meantime, continuing with gentle warm compresses as advised by your doctor can be beneficial. Warm compresses can help improve circulation to the area, promoting healing and potentially reducing swelling. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive salt intake can also assist in managing swelling.
If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as increased redness, pain, or discharge, it is essential to contact your surgeon immediately, as these could be signs of complications.
In summary, while it is normal to experience swelling after eyelid surgery, the duration can vary. Following your surgeon's post-operative care instructions, being patient with the healing process, and consulting with a qualified professional for additional treatments if necessary are all important steps in ensuring a smooth recovery. Always prioritize communication with your healthcare provider regarding any concerns you may have during your recovery journey.
