Delayed menstruation?

Could you please clarify if my girlfriend took emergency contraception after her period on November 5, 2015, and then had her next period around December 15, 2015? Now, on January 19, 2016, her period has not yet arrived.
Is this situation normal? We had unprotected intercourse between December and January, but I did not ejaculate inside.

Danxin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/19

Without proper contraception, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
Methods such as calculating the safe period, withdrawal (coitus interruptus), and using condoms alone are not adequate contraceptive measures.
Before ejaculation, males release pre-ejaculatory fluid, which may contain sperm, thus posing a risk of pregnancy.
If sexual activity occurs frequently, it is recommended for females to take oral contraceptives (which are the most effective form of contraception) consistently, along with the male partner using condoms to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
This approach protects both partners.
Regular use of emergency contraception can lead to menstrual irregularities and should only be considered in urgent situations; it is not advisable for routine use.
By practicing effective pre-coital contraception, there is no need to worry after each sexual encounter.
If there are concerns about the possibility of pregnancy, a home pregnancy test can be taken approximately 2-3 weeks after intercourse.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the potential causes is essential for addressing any worries. In your girlfriend's case, there are several factors to consider regarding her delayed menstruation since her last period on November 5, 2015.

First, it's important to recognize that hormonal fluctuations can significantly impact the menstrual cycle. The use of emergency contraception (commonly referred to as the "morning-after pill") can lead to changes in the menstrual cycle. After taking such medication, it is not uncommon for women to experience delays in their next period, as the hormones in these pills can disrupt the normal hormonal balance that regulates menstruation. In your girlfriend's case, since she took the emergency contraceptive after her period in November, it is possible that this has contributed to the delay in her January period.

Additionally, the timing of sexual activity can also play a role. You mentioned that there was unprotected sexual intercourse between December and January, but without ejaculation inside. While this significantly reduces the risk of pregnancy, it does not eliminate it entirely, as pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm. If there is any concern about potential pregnancy, it may be wise for her to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are generally reliable and can provide peace of mind.

Stress and lifestyle changes can also affect the menstrual cycle. Factors such as changes in diet, exercise, sleep patterns, and emotional stress can lead to irregularities in menstruation. If your girlfriend has experienced any significant changes in her life or routine, this could also be a contributing factor to her delayed period.

If her period does not arrive soon, or if she experiences any unusual symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs, it would be advisable for her to consult a healthcare provider. A medical professional can conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly an ultrasound to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while a delayed period can be concerning, it is not uncommon, especially following the use of emergency contraception. Factors such as hormonal changes, potential pregnancy, stress, and lifestyle adjustments can all contribute to menstrual irregularities. If the delay continues or if there are any additional concerns, seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure her health and well-being.
