Color differences after circumcision?
Dear Doctor, after my circumcision, there is a noticeable color difference between the original dark skin of the foreskin and the inner layer of skin, which is red.
Is there any way to improve this? (Because there is about 1 cm of red skin left under the glans, it becomes very obvious during an erection.) Thank you, Dr.
Hsu, for your response.

Hello, it depends on the individual's constitution; some people may have a lifelong difference in skin color.
This is due to two different types of epidermis, which will definitely have a boundary.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

More Info
After circumcision, it is common for individuals to notice a color discrepancy between the glans (the head of the penis) and the surrounding skin. This difference in pigmentation can be attributed to several factors, including the natural color of the skin, the removal of the foreskin, and the exposure of the glans, which may have been protected and less pigmented prior to the procedure.
1. Understanding Color Discrepancy: The glans is typically more sensitive and has a different texture compared to the skin of the shaft. The foreskin, which is often darker, provides a protective barrier that can lead to a difference in pigmentation once it is removed. The glans may appear redder or lighter due to increased blood flow and exposure to air and friction, which can stimulate the skin to become more vascularized.
2. Improvement Methods: While there are no guaranteed methods to completely equalize the color difference, there are several approaches that may help improve the appearance over time:
- Topical Treatments: Some individuals consider using topical creams that contain ingredients like hydroquinone or retinoids, which can help lighten darker areas of skin. However, these should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional, as they can cause irritation or other side effects.
- Moisturization: Keeping the area well-moisturized can improve the overall appearance of the skin. Products that are fragrance-free and designed for sensitive skin are recommended to avoid irritation.
- Sun Protection: If the area is exposed to sunlight, using sunscreen can prevent further darkening of the skin and protect sensitive areas from UV damage.
- Time: Often, the color discrepancy may diminish over time as the skin adjusts to the new exposure and the glans may become less red as it becomes accustomed to its new environment.
3. Consultation with a Specialist: If the color difference is concerning or if there are any other symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or unusual changes in the skin, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist or a urologist. They can provide personalized advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
4. Psychological Aspect: It’s important to note that many individuals experience similar changes after circumcision, and it is a common concern. If the appearance of the skin is affecting your self-esteem or causing anxiety, discussing these feelings with a healthcare provider or a counselor can be beneficial.
In summary, while the color difference after circumcision is a common occurrence, there are methods to potentially improve the appearance over time. Consulting with a healthcare professional can provide you with tailored advice and ensure that any treatment you consider is safe and appropriate for your skin type.
