Discharge and itching?
Hello Doctor, I previously had urethritis.
My menstrual period ended last week, and after that, I had sexual intercourse with my female partner.
A couple of days later, I noticed an increase in discharge, but the color was unchanged.
Then I started to experience some itching, and the discharge turned brown, while the itching continued.
What could be the possible cause of this?

I recommend seeing a gynecologist for an examination.

More Info
Increased discharge and itching after menstruation can be concerning symptoms, especially for someone with a history of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Based on the information provided, it is essential to consider several potential causes for these symptoms.
Firstly, the increase in discharge following menstruation can be attributed to several factors. Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle can lead to variations in vaginal discharge. After menstruation, the body may produce more discharge as it prepares for ovulation. However, if the discharge is accompanied by itching and changes in color, it may indicate an underlying issue.
One possible cause is a yeast infection, which is common and can occur after menstruation. Yeast infections can lead to increased discharge that is often thick and white, but some women may experience a change in color. Itching is a hallmark symptom of a yeast infection, and it can be exacerbated by sexual activity, which may introduce bacteria or irritants into the vaginal area.
Another possibility is bacterial vaginosis (BV), which is characterized by an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria. BV can cause an increase in discharge that may have a fishy odor and can also lead to itching. This condition is not sexually transmitted but can be influenced by sexual activity.
Additionally, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) should be considered, especially if there was unprotected sexual contact. Infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea can cause increased discharge, itching, and changes in color. It is crucial to get tested for STIs if there is any suspicion, as early detection and treatment are vital.
The brown color of the discharge could indicate old blood, which can occur after menstruation. However, if it persists or is accompanied by other symptoms like itching, it is essential to seek medical attention.
Given your history of urinary tract infections, it is also worth considering that the recent sexual activity could have introduced bacteria into the urethra, leading to irritation or a new infection. Symptoms of a UTI can sometimes overlap with those of vaginal infections, so it is important to differentiate between them.
In summary, the combination of increased discharge, itching, and a change in color after menstruation could be due to a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, sexually transmitted infections, or even a urinary tract infection. It is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation, which may include a pelvic examination and laboratory tests to determine the exact cause. Treatment options will depend on the diagnosis, and addressing the issue promptly can help alleviate symptoms and prevent further complications.
In the meantime, maintaining good hygiene, avoiding irritants such as scented soaps or douches, and wearing breathable cotton underwear can help manage symptoms. If you experience severe discomfort, fever, or any other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
