About Candida Infection

Hello, doctor! Recently, I suspected I had a Candida infection after having sexual intercourse with my wife.
I visited a doctor who prescribed antibiotics for me.
However, my condition has been fluctuating between better and worse.
I often experience a burning sensation on the glans and the corona, as well as a painful burning feeling in the foreskin.
Washing with plain water and using petroleum jelly have not effectively improved the situation.
This issue has been very troubling for me! What should I do?

Zhen kunrao, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/25

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, I understand your concerns.

1.
It is recommended that both partners undergo treatment simultaneously.

2.
For glans care, please refer to the suggestions I previously provided online.
If there is still no improvement, it may indicate a coexisting infection, and I recommend continuing medical treatment.

If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.
Please remember that online responses should only serve as a reference; it is essential to seek care at a medical facility when necessary.

Best regards,
Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai,
Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Candida infections, commonly referred to as yeast infections, are caused by an overgrowth of the Candida species, particularly Candida albicans. These infections can affect various parts of the body, including the mouth (oral thrush), skin, and genital areas. In men, Candida infections can lead to symptoms such as burning sensations, redness, and swelling of the glans (the head of the penis) and the foreskin, which seems to be what you are experiencing.

Symptoms of Candida Infections
The symptoms of a Candida infection can vary depending on the area affected. In men, the most common symptoms include:
1. Burning Sensation: This is often felt during urination or sexual intercourse.

2. Redness and Swelling: The glans and foreskin may appear red and swollen.

3. Itching: There may be persistent itching in the affected area.

4. Discharge: A thick, white discharge may be present, similar to cottage cheese.

5. Pain: Discomfort or pain during sexual activity or when cleaning the area.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis of a Candida infection typically involves a physical examination and may include laboratory tests to confirm the presence of Candida. It is essential to differentiate between a Candida infection and other conditions such as bacterial infections or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which can present with similar symptoms.

Treatment Options
1. Antifungal Medications: The primary treatment for Candida infections is antifungal medications. These can be topical (applied directly to the affected area) or systemic (oral medications). Common antifungal treatments include clotrimazole, miconazole, and fluconazole.

2. Hygiene Practices: Maintaining good hygiene is crucial. Ensure that the genital area is kept clean and dry, as moisture can promote the growth of Candida. Avoid using irritants such as scented soaps or lotions.

3. Dietary Changes: Some individuals find that reducing sugar intake can help manage Candida overgrowth, as sugar can promote yeast growth.

4. Avoiding Irritants: Avoid tight-fitting clothing and synthetic materials that can trap moisture. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton.

5. Probiotics: Incorporating probiotics into your diet may help restore the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in your body.

When to Seek Further Help
If you have been prescribed antibiotics and your symptoms persist or worsen, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. Antibiotics can disrupt the natural flora of the body, leading to an overgrowth of Candida. Your doctor may need to reassess your condition and possibly prescribe antifungal treatment instead.

Conclusion
It sounds like you are experiencing a frustrating and uncomfortable situation. Given that your symptoms have been persistent and have not improved with the initial treatment, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider again. They may consider performing additional tests to rule out other potential causes of your symptoms and adjust your treatment plan accordingly. Remember, effective communication with your healthcare provider is key to finding a solution that works for you.
