Vaginal discharge issues?

Hello doctor, since I started my menstrual cycle, I have been experiencing an issue with vaginal discharge.
The amount is significant and occurs daily, but there is no itching.
I enjoy eating ice and cold foods, and I don't drink water often.
Could these factors be the reason for the excessive discharge? Will having this much discharge affect my ability to conceive?

Nana, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/01/25

Dr. Yang Wangjun reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: Normal vaginal discharge includes exfoliated epithelial cells, secretions from the vaginal mucosa, and mucus from the cervical glands.
If there is an infection in the vagina or cervix, there will be infectious discharge.
Therefore, if there is leukorrhea, a sample of the discharge can be taken for saline wet mount, KOH prep, and Gram stain to determine if there is an infection.
Thank you for your message!

Abnormal vaginal discharge can be a common concern for many women, and understanding its causes and implications is essential for maintaining reproductive health. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing an increase in vaginal discharge following your menstrual period, which is characterized as being copious but not accompanied by itching. You also mentioned a preference for cold foods and a low water intake, which raises some interesting points regarding potential lifestyle influences on your discharge.

Firstly, it’s important to note that vaginal discharge can vary significantly throughout the menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations. After menstruation, it is common for women to experience an increase in discharge as the body prepares for ovulation. This discharge is typically clear or white and may be more abundant at certain times of the month. The absence of itching or irritation is a positive sign, as it often indicates that there is no active infection, such as a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, which are commonly associated with abnormal discharge.

Regarding your lifestyle choices, consuming a lot of cold foods and not drinking enough water can affect your overall health, but they are unlikely to be direct causes of increased vaginal discharge. However, staying hydrated is crucial for overall bodily functions, including maintaining a healthy vaginal environment. Dehydration can lead to changes in the consistency and volume of discharge, but it is not typically a primary cause of excessive discharge.

As for your concern about whether increased discharge could affect your ability to conceive, the answer is generally no. Increased vaginal discharge, especially when it is normal in appearance and not accompanied by other symptoms, does not typically interfere with fertility. However, if the discharge changes in color, consistency, or odor, or if you experience additional symptoms such as pain, itching, or discomfort, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider. These changes could indicate an underlying condition that may require treatment.

In summary, while your increased vaginal discharge may be concerning, it is often a normal physiological response to hormonal changes in your menstrual cycle. Maintaining good hydration and a balanced diet can support your overall health, but they are not directly linked to the volume of discharge. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms change, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, including a pelvic exam and possibly laboratory tests, to rule out any infections or other conditions that may need attention.
