Managing Irregular Menstrual Cycles: Traditional Chinese Medicine vs. Western Treatments - Traditional Chinese Medicine

Irregular menstruation

In the past, my menstrual cycle was approximately 33-36 days.
However, over the past six months, I have noticed that it has been getting longer.
Since September of last year, I have been trying to track my basal body temperature, but there have been no significant fluctuations (it has not exceeded 36.7°C and there has not been a sustained high temperature for 14 days).
I found online that this indicates anovulation! I am also concerned that I might have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
This month, my cycle has already lasted 57 days without menstruation (I have received a medication to induce my period).
I want to regulate my body so that I can conceive! It seems that Western medicine primarily prescribes ovulation-inducing drugs, but I have heard that these can be harmful to the body.
Would it be better to consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner?

Dr. Yan Sumei reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Dear online friend Han: If you want to regulate your body and then conceive, you can certainly seek help from a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
You may also consult a Western medicine obstetrician-gynecologist to see if, as you mentioned, ovulation medications are harmful or if you have polycystic ovary syndrome.
Wishing you health and peace! Sincerely, Yen Su-Mei, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nantou Hospital.

More Info

Managing irregular menstrual cycles can be a complex issue, and both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine offer different approaches to treatment. Understanding the nuances of each can help you make an informed decision about which path to pursue.

Western Medicine Approach
In Western medicine, irregular menstrual cycles are often treated with hormonal therapies, including ovulation induction medications such as Clomiphene Citrate or Letrozole. These medications work by stimulating the ovaries to produce eggs, thereby promoting ovulation. While effective, these treatments can have side effects, including mood swings, hot flashes, and potential risks of multiple pregnancies. Additionally, if you have conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), managing insulin levels and weight may also be part of the treatment plan, as these factors can significantly impact menstrual regularity.

If you have already received a trigger shot to induce menstruation, it indicates that your healthcare provider is actively monitoring your cycle and attempting to regulate it. However, if you are concerned about the side effects of Western medications, it is essential to discuss these concerns with your healthcare provider. They can provide insights into the risks and benefits of each treatment option and help you weigh them against your personal health goals.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach
On the other hand, TCM offers a holistic approach to managing menstrual irregularities. TCM practitioners believe that menstrual health is closely tied to the balance of Qi (energy), blood, and the health of the organs involved in reproduction, particularly the kidneys, liver, and spleen. TCM treatments may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary recommendations, and lifestyle modifications.

1. Acupuncture: This practice involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to promote energy flow and balance. Many women report improvements in menstrual regularity and reduced symptoms of PMS after undergoing acupuncture.

2. Herbal Medicine: TCM often utilizes herbal formulas tailored to the individual's specific condition. For instance, herbs like Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) and Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) are commonly used to regulate menstrual cycles and support reproductive health.

3. Dietary Changes: TCM emphasizes the importance of nutrition in maintaining health. A diet rich in whole foods, warm meals, and specific herbs can help nourish the body and promote regular cycles.

4. Lifestyle Modifications: Stress management techniques such as Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or meditation can also be beneficial, as stress is known to impact hormonal balance and menstrual regularity.

Combining Approaches
Many women find success by combining both Western and TCM approaches. For instance, you might consider starting with TCM to help regulate your cycle naturally while also consulting with a Western medical provider for monitoring and potential hormonal treatments if necessary. This integrative approach can provide a comprehensive strategy for managing your menstrual health.

Conclusion
Ultimately, the choice between TCM and Western medicine should be based on your personal preferences, health history, and comfort level with each treatment modality. It is crucial to consult with healthcare professionals from both fields to create a well-rounded treatment plan tailored to your needs. If you suspect you have PCOS or any other underlying condition, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare provider is essential for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Remember, your health journey is unique, and finding the right balance for you is key to achieving your goals, including the desire to conceive.
