Is douching necessary when using vaginal suppositories?

Hello, doctor.
My physician prescribed me a vaginal suppository called Boric Acid to treat cervical inflammation, but he told me to use a cleansing solution for douching every day.
However, in my previous experiences with suppositories at other clinics, no doctor ever mentioned the need for douching.
Isn't it said that frequent douching can actually increase the risk of infection? So, do I really need to douche before inserting the suppository every day? Thank you, doctor!

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Wishing you good health.

When it comes to the use of vaginal suppositories, such as the one prescribed for treating cervical inflammation, the question of whether to douche beforehand is a common concern among patients. Douching, which involves rinsing out the vagina with water or other fluids, has been a topic of debate in the medical community.
Firstly, it is essential to understand that the vagina is a self-cleaning organ. It maintains a balanced environment through natural secretions and beneficial bacteria, primarily Lactobacillus, which help to prevent infections. Regular douching can disrupt this natural balance, potentially leading to an increased risk of infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or yeast infections. Therefore, many healthcare providers advise against douching as a routine practice.

In your case, your doctor has recommended using a douching solution before inserting the vaginal suppository. This could be specific to the treatment protocol for your condition. Douching before using a suppository may help clear out any discharge or debris, allowing for better absorption of the medication. However, it is crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions, as they are tailored to your individual health needs.

If you have concerns about the necessity of douching, it is advisable to discuss them with your healthcare provider. They can provide clarity on why they recommend this practice in your situation and whether it is essential for the effectiveness of the treatment. If you feel uncomfortable with the idea of douching, express your concerns to your doctor. They may offer alternative recommendations or reassure you about the risks involved.

In summary, while douching is generally not recommended due to the potential for disrupting the vaginal flora and increasing the risk of infections, there may be specific circumstances where it is advised as part of a treatment plan. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that you are comfortable and informed about your treatment regimen.
