Blood-stained discharge issue?

Recently, I have been experiencing dull pain on both sides of my lower abdomen, soreness in my lower back, frequent urination, lack of appetite when seeing food, and nausea.
After visiting the doctor, I was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection.
However, the next day, I noticed red streaks in my vaginal discharge (my last menstrual period was on the 10th) and it also had a thick consistency.
Should this be unrelated to the urinary tract infection? What could be going on? (Additionally, I had sexual intercourse eleven days ago with protection, and the test came back negative.)

Niming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/03

Hello, the presence of red streaks in vaginal discharge is likely not related to a urinary tract infection.
It is advisable to monitor the situation.
If there is no improvement, it is recommended to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

Understanding blood-stained discharge can be a complex issue for many women, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, back discomfort, frequent urination, loss of appetite, and nausea. Based on your description, it seems you have been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection (UTI), which can indeed cause discomfort and various symptoms, but the appearance of blood-stained discharge raises additional concerns.

Firstly, it is important to clarify that while a UTI primarily affects the urinary system, it can sometimes lead to secondary symptoms that may involve the reproductive system. The presence of blood in your discharge, especially after a recent UTI diagnosis, could be indicative of several possibilities. One common cause of blood-stained discharge is hormonal fluctuations, particularly if you are close to your menstrual cycle. Since you mentioned your last period was on the 10th, it is possible that the blood-stained discharge is related to ovulation or the onset of your next menstrual cycle.

However, given that you also experienced abdominal pain and back discomfort, it is crucial to consider other potential causes. For instance, conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, or even cervical issues could lead to similar symptoms. PID, in particular, can occur as a complication of untreated STIs, and it can cause both abdominal pain and abnormal bleeding. Endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside it, can also lead to pain and irregular bleeding.

It is also worth noting that the timing of your sexual activity (11 days ago) could be relevant. While you mentioned using protection, any form of sexual activity can sometimes irritate the vaginal walls or cervix, leading to minor injuries that could cause bleeding. This is especially true if there was any vigorous activity involved.

Given these considerations, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider. You should inform them about the blood-stained discharge, the timing of your last menstrual period, and any other symptoms you are experiencing. A thorough examination, including a pelvic exam and possibly additional tests such as a Pap smear or ultrasound, may be warranted to rule out any serious conditions.

In summary, while the blood-stained discharge may not be directly related to your UTI, it is important to investigate further to ensure that there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed. Your symptoms warrant careful evaluation, and open communication with your healthcare provider will be key in determining the appropriate next steps for your health. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your reproductive health.
