Delayed menstruation and right ovarian pain?
I have a question for the doctor.
My last menstrual period started on October 27, and my cycle is usually around 50 days, though it is not very regular.
This time, my period was expected around December 25, but it still hasn't arrived.
I have a steady partner and we have had sexual intercourse.
I used a pregnancy test two mornings ago, and it showed one line.
Recently, during our last sexual encounter, we used a condom, but I noticed pain on the right side of my ovary, which I have never experienced before.
Should I see a gynecologist? The last time I went, the doctor just advised me not to stay up late.

It sounds like you are experiencing a combination of delayed menstruation and right ovarian pain, which can understandably be concerning. Given your irregular menstrual cycle, which you mentioned averages around 50 days, it is not uncommon for periods to be delayed. However, the additional symptom of right ovarian pain, especially if it is new for you, warrants further investigation.
First, let's address the delayed menstruation. Since your last period was on October 27 and you expected your next one around December 25, it is indeed late. Irregular cycles can be influenced by various factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and lifestyle factors. The fact that you have a regular sexual partner and have engaged in sexual activity increases the importance of ruling out pregnancy, especially since you mentioned using a pregnancy test that showed one line, indicating a negative result. However, it’s important to note that home pregnancy tests can sometimes yield false negatives, particularly if taken too early.
Now, regarding the right ovarian pain, this could be due to several reasons. One possibility is that it could be related to ovulation, which can sometimes cause discomfort known as mittelschmerz, or ovulation pain. However, if the pain is persistent, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, nausea, or unusual discharge, it could indicate a more serious condition, such as an ovarian cyst, pelvic inflammatory disease, or even an ectopic pregnancy, especially if there is a possibility of pregnancy.
Given these factors, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist. They can perform a thorough examination, which may include a pelvic ultrasound to assess the ovaries and uterus for any abnormalities, such as cysts or other issues. Additionally, blood tests can help evaluate hormone levels and rule out pregnancy more definitively.
In summary, while some irregularity in menstrual cycles can be normal, the combination of delayed menstruation and new-onset ovarian pain should not be ignored. Seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Your health is important, and a gynecologist will be able to provide you with the appropriate care and guidance based on your specific situation.
