Sudden episodes of strong heartbeats?
Recently, I have often felt my heart beating very noticeably, and it usually accelerates, but it lasts only for a short time, typically around 15 seconds.
I thought it was due to the cold weather lately, but last night, while lying in bed preparing to sleep, I suddenly felt my heart beating very forcefully for about five or six beats, and I could feel significant movement in my entire chest.
I have never experienced anything this severe before.
Should I consult a doctor and get checked at the hospital for this situation?

Hello, it sounds like it could be autonomic nervous system dysfunction or paroxysmal arrhythmia.
If the symptoms persist, it is advisable to visit a cardiology clinic for further examination.

Experiencing sudden and strong heartbeats, often referred to as palpitations, can be concerning, especially when they are accompanied by other symptoms or occur with increased frequency. It's important to understand when these sensations warrant immediate medical attention.
Palpitations can be caused by a variety of factors, including anxiety, stress, caffeine consumption, dehydration, or underlying medical conditions such as arrhythmias, heart disease, or hyperthyroidism. In your case, the sudden and forceful heartbeats you described, particularly when lying down and preparing for sleep, could be indicative of several things. While it’s possible that changes in weather or stress levels could contribute to these sensations, the intensity and frequency of your symptoms are key factors to consider.
Here are some guidelines on when to seek medical attention for palpitations:
1. Duration and Frequency: If your palpitations last longer than a few seconds or occur frequently, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. In your case, since you mentioned that the strong heartbeats lasted for five to six beats and felt more intense than before, this is a signal to seek further evaluation.
2. Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or excessive sweating, you should seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms could indicate a more serious underlying condition, such as a heart attack or arrhythmia.
3. Underlying Health Conditions: Given your history of heart-related issues, including previous heart spasms and the use of medications for heart conditions, it is crucial to be vigilant about any new or worsening symptoms. If you have a known heart condition, any significant change in your symptoms should be discussed with your cardiologist.
4. Lifestyle Factors: Consider any recent changes in your lifestyle that could contribute to palpitations, such as increased caffeine intake, stress, or changes in medication. If you suspect that these factors may be influencing your heart rhythm, it’s still wise to consult with a healthcare professional.
5. Personal and Family History: If you have a family history of heart disease or if you have risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol, it’s important to be proactive about your heart health.
In summary, while occasional palpitations can be benign, the sudden and forceful nature of your recent experiences, especially if they are new or different from what you have felt before, should not be ignored. It would be prudent to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider or a cardiologist for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), a Holter monitor (24-hour ECG), or an echocardiogram to assess your heart's function and rhythm.
Additionally, managing anxiety and stress through relaxation techniques, regular exercise, and a healthy diet can also help mitigate palpitations. However, the priority should be to rule out any serious underlying conditions through professional medical evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, so do not hesitate to seek help when you feel something is off.
