Can Radiant C be used in combination with retinoic acid?

Hello, I recently purchased a Herbalife product called Radiant C (Vitamin C Cream).
The advertised ingredients are as follows: it features a unique vitamin C emulsion formula as the main component, which aims to make the skin healthier and brighter while reducing the effects of stress, fatigue, and pollution on the skin.
The 30ml product contains key ingredients: Vitamin C, Vitamin E, apricot, apple, and carrot extracts—all derived from natural herbal sources.
Benefits:
◆ Helps the skin appear softer, healthier, and brighter
◆ Can significantly improve the skin by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
◆ Minimizes the appearance of pores, making them less noticeable
◆ Suitable for all skin types
However, while it claims to be suitable for all skin types, I noticed that the packaging mentions it contains alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs).
I personally use Retin-A (tretinoin) cream (0.025%) at night.
I would like to know if these two products can be used together.
Specifically, can I apply the tretinoin at night and the Radiant C in the morning without causing any adverse effects? Thank you.

Dr. Jiang Zheen reply Dermatology

Dear Miss Wang: I believe it should be fine as long as the usage of both is staggered.
As long as you do not experience any discomfort, it should be acceptable.
May God bless you and grant you peace.

Using Radiant C, which contains vitamin C and other herbal extracts, in conjunction with Retinoic Acid (commonly known as Tretinoin) can be a common concern for many individuals looking to enhance their skincare routine. Both products have their unique benefits, but understanding how they interact is crucial for achieving the desired results without adverse effects.

Compatibility of Radiant C and Retinoic Acid
1. Mechanism of Action:
- Retinoic Acid: This is a derivative of vitamin A and is widely used in dermatology for its ability to promote cell turnover, reduce acne, and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It works by increasing the rate of skin cell turnover, which can lead to irritation, especially when first introduced into a skincare routine.

- Radiant C: This product primarily focuses on providing antioxidant protection through vitamin C, which helps in brightening the skin, reducing pigmentation, and combating oxidative stress. Vitamin C is known for its ability to enhance collagen synthesis and improve skin texture.

2. Potential Interactions:
- While there is no direct contraindication for using vitamin C and retinoids together, the combination can sometimes lead to increased irritation. This is particularly true for individuals with sensitive skin or those who are new to using retinoids. The acidity of vitamin C can potentially destabilize retinoids, but this is more of a concern when both are applied at the same time rather than at different times of the day.

3. Recommended Usage:
- Morning and Night Routine: It is advisable to use Radiant C in the morning and Retinoic Acid at night. This separation allows each product to work effectively without interfering with each other. Vitamin C can provide antioxidant protection during the day, while Retinoic Acid can work overnight to promote skin renewal.

- Patch Testing: Before fully integrating both products into your routine, consider conducting a patch test. Apply a small amount of each product on different areas of your skin to monitor for any adverse reactions.

4. Monitoring Skin Response:
- When starting any new skincare regimen, especially one involving active ingredients like Retinoic Acid, it is essential to monitor your skin's response. If you experience excessive redness, peeling, or irritation, it may be beneficial to reduce the frequency of application or consult with a dermatologist.

5. Hydration and Sun Protection:
- Both products can be drying, especially Retinoic Acid. Ensure you are using a good moisturizer to maintain skin hydration. Additionally, since Retinoic Acid can increase sun sensitivity, applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day is crucial to protect your skin from UV damage.

Conclusion
In summary, using Radiant C in the morning and Retinoic Acid at night can be a safe and effective combination for improving skin health and appearance. However, it is essential to pay attention to your skin's reaction and adjust usage accordingly. If you have any concerns or experience significant irritation, consulting with a dermatologist would be wise to tailor a skincare routine that best suits your needs.
