Gastrointestinal issues?
Hello doctor, about two years ago I had a gastrointestinal flu.
A year later, I suddenly noticed a change in my bowel habits; I have to rush to the bathroom every day after breakfast, and I feel much better after having a bowel movement, which is usually soft.
Then I started having stomach issues, occasionally experiencing stomach pain, bloating, and a sour feeling in my stomach.
Last night, I had a gathering but wasn't hungry, so I only ate a little.
After returning home, I felt very hungry and ate some fruit, which led to stomach pain.
I quickly took some antacids, but then my stomach started hurting, and I rushed to the bathroom to have diarrhea.
Before going to bed, my stomach was gurgling, and I felt bloated.
This morning, when I was getting ready to eat, my stomach started hurting again, but I didn't have diarrhea.
I drank a lot of hot water, and the pain subsided.
Should I see a doctor and take medication? I usually take gastrointestinal medication when I have stomach pain.

Hello: It is not recommended to self-medicate.
If necessary, please consult a gastroenterologist.
It is more appropriate to take medication after a confirmed diagnosis.

It sounds like you are experiencing a range of gastrointestinal symptoms that can be quite distressing. Based on your description, it seems you have been dealing with changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bloating, and discomfort after eating. These symptoms can be indicative of several underlying gastrointestinal issues, and it is important to understand when to seek medical help.
Firstly, it is essential to recognize that gastrointestinal symptoms can arise from various causes, including dietary choices, stress, infections, and chronic conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), gastritis, or even peptic ulcers. Given your history of gastrointestinal issues, including a previous episode of gastroenteritis and the recent onset of symptoms, it is advisable to monitor your condition closely.
Here are some key points to consider regarding your symptoms and when to seek medical attention:
1. Persistent Symptoms: If your abdominal pain, bloating, or changes in bowel habits persist for more than a few days, or if they worsen, it is crucial to consult a healthcare provider. Chronic symptoms can indicate an underlying condition that may require further evaluation.
2. Severity of Pain: If you experience severe abdominal pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter medications or home remedies, it is important to seek medical attention. Severe pain could indicate a more serious issue, such as an obstruction or inflammation.
3. Accompanying Symptoms: Pay attention to any additional symptoms that may arise, such as fever, vomiting, significant weight loss, or blood in your stool. These symptoms warrant immediate medical evaluation, as they could indicate a more serious condition.
4. Dietary Triggers: Since you mentioned that your symptoms seem to worsen after eating certain foods, it may be helpful to keep a food diary. This can help identify any specific triggers that exacerbate your symptoms, allowing you to make dietary adjustments.
5. Response to Medication: If you find that over-the-counter gastrointestinal medications are not providing relief, or if you experience side effects from these medications, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for alternative treatments or a more tailored approach.
6. Stress and Lifestyle Factors: Stress can significantly impact gastrointestinal health. If you are experiencing increased stress or anxiety, consider discussing this with your healthcare provider, as they may recommend lifestyle modifications or stress management techniques.
7. Regular Check-ups: Given your history of gastrointestinal issues, regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help monitor your condition and catch any potential problems early.
In summary, while some gastrointestinal symptoms can be managed with over-the-counter medications and dietary changes, it is important to seek medical help if your symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by concerning signs. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include physical examinations, laboratory tests, or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment. Remember, your health is paramount, and it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to gastrointestinal issues.
