Bite from a rabbit?
Hello Dr.
Lee, I would like to ask you about something.
Three days ago, I was bitten by a lionhead rabbit on the inner thigh while at a friend's house.
Although I was wearing jeans, there are still small areas of red bruising and some abrasions, but there was no bleeding.
I did not disinfect the wound immediately; I only used an alcohol swab to disinfect it two hours later when I got home.
The wound is healing now, but the bruising is still visible.
Do I need to get a tetanus shot? Thank you!

Hello! Please proceed to the surgical department.
If you haven't received a tetanus shot in the past year, you will need to get one.
Take oral antibiotics for three days, and clean the wound daily while applying antibiotic ointment.
Avoid contact with tap water.

When it comes to animal bites, particularly from pets like rabbits, there are several factors to consider regarding the need for a tetanus shot. Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which can enter the body through wounds, especially deep puncture wounds. While rabbit bites are generally not as high-risk as bites from other animals, such as dogs or cats, it is still important to assess the situation carefully.
In your case, you mentioned that you were bitten on the inner thigh, and although you were wearing jeans, there was still some bruising and a small area of broken skin. You also noted that you did not initially disinfect the wound but did so a couple of hours later with alcohol wipes. The fact that the wound is healing and there is no active bleeding is a positive sign.
Here are some considerations regarding whether you need a tetanus shot:
1. Tetanus Vaccination History: The first thing to check is your vaccination history. If you have received a tetanus booster within the last 10 years, you may not need another shot. The general recommendation is to receive a booster every 10 years, but if the wound is particularly dirty or deep, a booster may be recommended if it has been more than 5 years since your last shot.
2. Nature of the Wound: Since the bite resulted in only minor skin damage and no significant bleeding, it is less likely to pose a risk for tetanus compared to deeper or more contaminated wounds. However, any break in the skin can potentially allow bacteria to enter, so it is essential to monitor the wound for signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or pus.
3. Animal Bite Considerations: While rabbits are not typically associated with rabies, it is still important to ensure that the animal was healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations. If the rabbit was a pet and is known to be healthy, the risk of rabies is low. However, if there are any concerns about the animal's health or if it was a wild rabbit, it may be prudent to consult a healthcare provider.
4. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: Given that you have some bruising and a broken skin area, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can assess the wound more thoroughly and determine if a tetanus shot is necessary based on your vaccination history and the specifics of the bite.
In summary, if you are unsure about your tetanus vaccination status or if it has been more than 5 years since your last booster, it is advisable to seek medical advice. A healthcare professional can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific situation. Additionally, keeping the wound clean and monitoring it for any signs of infection is crucial for proper healing. If you notice any concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to seek medical attention.
