Wound care after drainage of a sebaceous cyst?

Hello doctor, I have a 3 cm epidermoid cyst on my back that recently became inflamed.
The doctor at the hospital made two small incisions (like this: x) to drain the pus and then sent me home with anti-inflammatory ointment.
I would like to ask if I should try to squeeze out any remaining pus myself? Also, can I apply a hydrocolloid dressing on the wound? Thank you!

Fu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/14

Dr. Li Zhonghuai reply Surgery

Hello! It is recommended to visit a general surgeon or a plastic surgeon.
A sebaceous cyst needs to be completely excised; otherwise, it may recur in the future.
Even if you squeeze out all the pus, the cyst wall still remains.
Additionally, using artificial skin is not advisable, as it can trap dirt inside and waste money! Changhua Hospital cares about you!

When it comes to post-cyst drainage wound care, it is essential to follow proper guidelines to ensure optimal healing and prevent complications such as infection. After undergoing a procedure to drain a cyst, like the one you described, there are several important steps and best practices to consider.

1. Keep the Area Clean
The first step in wound care is to keep the area clean. You should gently clean the wound with mild soap and water. Avoid using alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, as these can irritate the wound and delay healing. Pat the area dry with a clean towel or let it air dry.

2. Apply Antibiotic Ointment
After cleaning, apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin) to the wound. This helps to prevent infection and keeps the area moist, which is beneficial for healing. Make sure to use a clean applicator or your clean fingers to avoid introducing bacteria.

3. Cover the Wound
Cover the wound with a sterile bandage or dressing. This protects the area from dirt and bacteria. If the wound is still draining, you may need to change the dressing frequently. Ensure that the dressing is breathable to allow moisture to escape while still protecting the wound.

4. Avoid Squeezing or Popping
It is crucial not to attempt to squeeze or pop the cyst or any remaining fluid. This can introduce bacteria into the wound and lead to infection. If you suspect that there is still pus or fluid inside, it is best to consult your healthcare provider rather than trying to address it yourself.

5. Monitor for Signs of Infection
Keep an eye on the wound for any signs of infection, which include increased redness, swelling, warmth, pain, or discharge that is yellow or green. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

6. Use of Artificial Skin
Regarding the use of artificial skin (like hydrocolloid dressings), it can be beneficial for certain types of wounds as it helps maintain a moist environment. However, if the wound is still draining significantly, it may not adhere well and could lead to maceration (softening and breaking down of skin). It’s best to consult your healthcare provider about whether it’s appropriate to use artificial skin in your specific case.

7. Follow-Up Care
Make sure to attend any follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider. They can assess the healing process and determine if further intervention is necessary. If the wound does not seem to be healing properly or if you have concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to them.

8. Pain Management
If you are experiencing discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain. Always follow the dosage instructions on the label or those provided by your healthcare provider.

9. Avoiding Irritants
Be cautious about exposing the wound to irritants, such as lotions, perfumes, or harsh chemicals. These can cause irritation and delay healing.

Conclusion
In summary, proper wound care after cyst drainage is vital for healing and preventing complications. Keep the area clean, apply antibiotic ointment, cover the wound appropriately, and avoid squeezing or popping the cyst. Monitor for signs of infection and consult your healthcare provider for any concerns. Following these guidelines will help ensure a smooth recovery.
