Experiencing internal pain when pressing on the ear with your fingers?
Hello, doctor.
As mentioned, two days ago, when I pressed the area behind my right ear with my hand, I felt pain inside the ear (only on the right side).
I consulted a doctor at a nearby clinic, who indicated that there was a piece of earwax that resembled a stone inside my ear and removed it on the spot.
However, as of today, I still experience pain.
What could be the reason for this? Thank you!

Hello: Commonly, it is an outer ear canal inflammation.
If it has been removed, it should gradually improve in a few days.
Wishing you safety and health.

Persistent ear pain following earwax removal can be concerning and may arise from several underlying causes. It's important to understand that while earwax removal is generally a straightforward procedure, it can sometimes lead to complications or discomfort that may persist for a period of time.
1. Trauma to the Ear Canal: During the process of earwax removal, especially if suction or other instruments are used, there is a possibility of minor trauma to the ear canal. This can lead to inflammation and pain. The ear canal is sensitive, and any irritation can result in discomfort that may last for several days.
2. Infection: If the ear canal was not properly cleaned or if there was pre-existing inflammation, the removal process could introduce bacteria, leading to an infection known as otitis externa (swimmer's ear). Symptoms of infection may include persistent pain, discharge, and sometimes swelling in the ear canal.
3. Residual Wax or Debris: Sometimes, even after a thorough cleaning, small pieces of earwax or debris can remain in the ear canal. This can cause irritation and discomfort. If the sensation of fullness or pain continues, it may be worth revisiting a healthcare provider to ensure that the ear canal is completely clear.
4. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure. If there is dysfunction in this tube, it can lead to a feeling of fullness, pressure, or pain in the ear. This can sometimes occur after procedures involving the ear, especially if there is any swelling or irritation.
5. Referred Pain: Pain in the ear can sometimes be referred from other areas, such as the jaw or throat. If you have had recent dental work or issues with your teeth, this could potentially contribute to ear pain.
6. Allergic Reactions: If any topical medications or cleaning solutions were used during the earwax removal, an allergic reaction could also cause localized pain and discomfort.
Given that you are experiencing persistent pain in your right ear after the removal of earwax, it is advisable to follow up with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination to rule out any complications such as infection or residual wax. Additionally, they may recommend treatments such as topical antibiotics if an infection is suspected or other interventions to relieve pain and inflammation.
In the meantime, you can manage discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, but be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging. Avoid inserting anything into the ear canal, including cotton swabs, as this can exacerbate the issue.
If you notice any worsening symptoms, such as increased pain, fever, or discharge from the ear, seek medical attention promptly. Persistent ear pain should not be ignored, especially if it continues beyond a few days after the procedure.
