Could I be pregnant?

Hello, doctor.
I am currently preparing for pregnancy.
My menstrual cycles have been quite regular for the past three months: November 13, December 13, and January 14.
However, this month it is already February 19, and I have not gotten my period yet.
I took a pregnancy test at the obstetrics and gynecology clinic yesterday, and it was negative.
Other than feeling some breast tenderness, I do not have any other discomfort.
Is it still possible that I could be pregnant?

QQ, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/19

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the chances are low, but you can wait a bit longer.
If your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When considering the possibility of pregnancy, especially in the context of irregular menstrual cycles, it's important to understand several factors that can influence your situation. Based on your description, you have had a regular menstrual cycle for the past three months, with your last period on January 14. As of February 19, you have not yet had your period, and a pregnancy test has returned negative.
1. Understanding Irregular Cycles: While your cycles have been regular, it’s not uncommon for women to experience occasional irregularities due to various factors such as stress, hormonal changes, illness, or lifestyle changes. These factors can lead to a delayed period even if you are not pregnant.
2. Pregnancy Testing: Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable, especially when taken after a missed period. However, if you tested too early, it might not have detected the pregnancy hormone (hCG) if you are indeed pregnant. If your period does not arrive soon, consider retesting in a few days or consulting with your healthcare provider for a blood test, which can detect lower levels of hCG.

3. Symptoms of Early Pregnancy: You mentioned experiencing breast tenderness, which can be an early sign of pregnancy. However, breast tenderness can also be associated with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or hormonal fluctuations unrelated to pregnancy.
4. Other Factors: If you have been under stress, have changed your diet, or have experienced any significant lifestyle changes, these could also contribute to a delay in your menstrual cycle. Additionally, conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can cause irregularities in menstrual cycles.

5. When to Seek Medical Advice: If your period does not occur within a week or two, or if you continue to have symptoms that concern you, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a more sensitive blood test and evaluate your overall health to determine if there are any underlying issues affecting your menstrual cycle.

6. Future Considerations: If you are actively trying to conceive, tracking ovulation can be beneficial. This can be done through methods such as monitoring basal body temperature, observing changes in cervical mucus, or using ovulation predictor kits. Understanding your ovulation cycle can help you identify the best times for conception.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given your missed period and breast tenderness, the negative pregnancy test suggests that it may be due to other factors. Monitoring your cycle and consulting with a healthcare provider if your period does not arrive soon will provide clarity and guidance on your reproductive health.
