The discharge is cloudy in color?
Hello! I have been consistently taking oral contraceptives (previously I took them for three weeks and then stopped for one week, but since December I have switched to continuous use without breaks, planning to stop for a month in March).
However, I occasionally forget to take a pill and I always follow the instructions to take it the next day.
Since I have been taking the contraceptive pills, I have been engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse.
Recently (around February 16 and 17), I noticed that my discharge has increased compared to usual, and it has a light brown color (dirty-looking) with a stronger odor.
Should I see a doctor, or should I wait and observe for a few days? The last sexual intercourse was on February 19, and I have not yet tested for pregnancy.

Hello, the inquirer: It is recommended to maintain cleanliness and dryness in the perineal area, avoid tight-fitting clothing, ensure adequate sleep, and consume a light diet.
Additionally, avoid stress and prolonged sitting.
Taking a sitz bath can help alleviate symptoms.
If symptoms persist or if menstruation is delayed by more than a week, please consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

When it comes to abnormal vaginal discharge, especially when you are on hormonal birth control, it is essential to pay attention to any changes in your body. In your case, you mentioned that you have been taking birth control pills continuously since December, with occasional missed doses. Recently, you noticed an increase in discharge that is brownish and has a stronger odor.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that hormonal contraceptives can affect your menstrual cycle and vaginal discharge. Some women experience changes in discharge when they start or change their birth control method. This can include variations in color, consistency, and odor. Brown discharge often indicates old blood, which can be a normal occurrence, especially if it happens outside of your regular menstrual period. However, the presence of a strong odor and a significant increase in discharge can be concerning.
Here are some potential reasons for your symptoms:
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: Birth control pills can cause changes in your hormonal levels, leading to variations in your discharge. Breakthrough bleeding or spotting can also occur, which might explain the brownish color.
2. Infection: A change in discharge that is accompanied by a strong odor can be a sign of an infection, such as bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection. These infections can occur regardless of birth control use and may require treatment.
3. Cervical or Uterine Issues: Sometimes, changes in discharge can be related to issues with the cervix or uterus, such as polyps or fibroids, especially if you have missed doses of your birth control.
4. Pregnancy: Although you mentioned that you have not yet tested for pregnancy, it is important to consider this possibility, especially if you have had unprotected intercourse. Some women experience changes in discharge early in pregnancy.
Given these considerations, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. Here’s why:
- Diagnosis: A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam, and may conduct tests to determine if there is an infection or other underlying issue.
- Peace of Mind: If you are feeling anxious about the changes in your body, seeing a doctor can provide reassurance and clarity regarding your health.
- Treatment: If an infection or another condition is diagnosed, timely treatment can prevent complications and help you feel better.
In the meantime, it would be wise to monitor your symptoms. If you experience additional symptoms such as itching, burning, unusual pain, or if the discharge becomes more pronounced, seek medical attention sooner rather than later.
In summary, while some changes in discharge can be normal, the combination of increased volume, a brownish color, and a strong odor warrants a visit to your healthcare provider. They can help you determine the cause of your symptoms and provide appropriate treatment if necessary. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
