Numbness of the tongue after tooth extraction?
This morning, I had a tooth extraction, and the anesthesia didn't wear off until almost evening.
However, the other side of my tongue is still numb and the anesthesia hasn't worn off.
Is this normal, or is there something I should do?

In the above situation, it is possible that the anesthetic affected the nerves of the tongue.
Generally, after 1-2 days, the anesthetic will completely wear off, and the sensation in the tongue will return to normal.
However, if the numbness persists beyond 2 days, it is advisable to return to the dentist for further evaluation.

Lingual numbness after tooth extraction can be a concerning experience, especially if it persists longer than expected. It’s important to understand the underlying reasons for this sensation and what it may indicate about your recovery process.
After a tooth extraction, particularly if the extraction involved the lower jaw (mandible), it is not uncommon to experience numbness in the tongue or the area around the extraction site. This numbness is often due to the local anesthetic used during the procedure, which can temporarily block nerve signals in the area. The lingual nerve, which provides sensation to the tongue, can sometimes be affected during dental procedures, especially if the extraction was complicated or if the tooth was impacted.
Typically, the effects of local anesthesia should wear off within a few hours after the procedure. However, in some cases, the numbness can last longer, especially if the anesthetic was injected near the lingual nerve. If the numbness persists beyond the expected duration, it may be a sign of nerve irritation or, in rare cases, nerve injury.
Here are some points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Duration of Numbness: If the numbness in your tongue has lasted all day and is still present by the evening, it may be worth contacting your dentist or oral surgeon. While some lingering numbness can be normal, especially after a complicated extraction, prolonged numbness should be evaluated.
2. Signs of Complications: Pay attention to any additional symptoms that may accompany the numbness, such as pain, swelling, or difficulty swallowing. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly.
3. Recovery Process: In most cases, if the numbness is due to the anesthetic, it should gradually resolve as the medication wears off. However, if it is due to nerve irritation, it may take longer for the sensation to return to normal.
4. Follow-Up Care: If the numbness persists for more than a few days or worsens, a follow-up appointment with your dentist is advisable. They may perform an examination and, if necessary, imaging studies to assess the situation further.
5. Preventive Measures: To minimize the risk of complications during future dental procedures, inform your dentist about any previous experiences with prolonged numbness or sensitivity. They may adjust their technique or approach based on your history.
In conclusion, while some numbness can be a normal part of the recovery process after tooth extraction, prolonged numbness should not be ignored. It is always best to err on the side of caution and consult with your dental professional if you have any concerns about your recovery. They can provide personalized advice and ensure that your healing process is on track.
