Menstrual irregularity
Hello, doctor.
I have irregular menstrual cycles.
My last period was in mid-December 2015, and I expected my next period to be in mid-January 2016.
However, in mid-January, I experienced several days of brown discharge.
In early February, I had a couple of days with a heavier amount of brown discharge (requiring the use of sanitary pads).
After a few days, I had another instance of a significant amount of brown discharge, and now, close to the end of February, I still have not felt the onset of my period.
I am seeking help to understand what the issue might be.
(I had sexual intercourse after mid-December, using a condom and withdrawing before ejaculation.)

What you need is not medical advice but a remedial course in sexual education.
For such questions, it is recommended to refer to the National Health Administration's "Sexual Well-being e-Learning" or the Obstetrics and Gynecology Society's "Consultation Guide for Adolescent Contraception" at http://goo.gl/dc6PfW.
Hello, the causes of abnormal female bleeding may include hormonal imbalances, emotional factors, diet, age, etc.
However, it is crucial to rule out conditions such as uterine tumors, endometrial hyperplasia, cervical lesions, or vaginal lesions.
Based on your description, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist to determine whether it is a hormonal imbalance or an early pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be concerning, and the presence of brown discharge along with delayed periods can indicate various underlying issues. Let's break down the potential causes and considerations regarding your situation.
Firstly, brown discharge is often old blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. It can occur at the beginning or end of a menstrual period, but if it appears outside of your expected cycle, it may suggest hormonal imbalances or other conditions. Given that your last menstrual period was in December 2015, and you experienced brown discharge in January and February 2016, it’s essential to consider several factors.
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Irregular cycles can often be attributed to hormonal fluctuations. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other endocrine issues can lead to irregular menstruation. Stress, significant weight changes, or excessive exercise can also impact hormone levels, leading to delayed periods and unusual discharge.
2. Pregnancy: Although you mentioned using a condom and practicing withdrawal, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. If there is any chance of pregnancy, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test. Early pregnancy can sometimes present with brown discharge, known as implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining.
3. Infections: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other infections can cause abnormal discharge and irregular cycles. If you experience additional symptoms such as itching, burning, or unusual odors, it’s crucial to seek medical attention.
4. Uterine Conditions: Conditions such as fibroids, polyps, or endometriosis can lead to irregular bleeding patterns and discharge. These conditions may require further evaluation through ultrasound or other imaging techniques.
5. Menstrual Cycle Variability: It’s also important to note that menstrual cycles can naturally vary. Factors such as age, lifestyle changes, and overall health can influence cycle regularity. However, significant changes warrant investigation.
Given your situation, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination, order blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly conduct imaging studies to assess your reproductive organs.
In summary, while brown discharge and delayed periods can be common occurrences, they can also indicate underlying health issues that require attention. Monitoring your symptoms and seeking medical advice will help clarify the situation and guide you toward appropriate treatment if necessary. Remember, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and regular check-ups can significantly contribute to menstrual health.
