Can I stop taking antibiotics when my period starts?

Hello! I went to get antibiotics on February 19 due to a urinary tract infection, and today is February 23.
My period has started, and the doctor prescribed Lisinopril capsules for me.
After taking them, I feel that my symptoms haven't improved much.
Since I have a follow-up appointment on February 26, can I stop taking the medication during this period?

Xiao Ting, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/23

Dr. Lin Wenxu reply Urology

It is recommended to continue taking the oral medication and to return for follow-up appointments without discontinuing the medication on your own.

When it comes to stopping antibiotics during your menstrual period, it is essential to consider several factors, including the type of infection you are treating, the specific antibiotic prescribed, and your overall health condition. In your case, you are taking antibiotics for a urinary tract infection (UTI), which is a common condition that can cause discomfort and requires appropriate treatment.

First and foremost, it is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions regarding antibiotic use. If your doctor prescribed the antibiotic for a specific duration, it is generally advisable to complete the full course, even if you start feeling better before finishing the medication. Stopping antibiotics prematurely can lead to a resurgence of the infection and may contribute to antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat.

In your situation, you mentioned that you started taking the antibiotic on February 19 and are experiencing your menstrual period now. While menstruation itself does not typically affect the efficacy of antibiotics, the symptoms of your UTI may be exacerbated by menstrual cramps or discomfort. If you feel that your symptoms have not improved significantly, it is essential to communicate this to your healthcare provider during your follow-up appointment on February 26.

If you are considering stopping the antibiotic before your scheduled follow-up, it is best to consult with your healthcare provider first. They can assess your symptoms and determine whether it is appropriate to continue the medication or if an alternative treatment plan is necessary. Additionally, if you experience any side effects from the antibiotic, such as gastrointestinal upset or allergic reactions, you should inform your doctor immediately.

In summary, while menstruation does not typically interfere with antibiotic treatment, it is crucial to adhere to your prescribed medication regimen unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider. If you have concerns about your symptoms or the effectiveness of the antibiotic, it is best to discuss these with your doctor during your upcoming appointment. They can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation and ensure that you receive the most effective treatment for your urinary tract infection.
