Foreskin laceration?
My foreskin seems to be severely peeling for about 3 to 4 days now, and there is a yellowish, sticky discharge.
Currently, I am just applying Betadine.
I'm not sure what to do and feel too shy to see a doctor, but almost the entire half-circle is peeling.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello, it is still important to see a physician.
Delaying too long may lead to fibrosis, which could require surgical debridement later on.

More Info
Severe foreskin peeling can be a concerning issue, and it's important to address it properly to avoid complications. Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a condition known as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans (the head of the penis) and can sometimes involve the foreskin. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including infections (bacterial or fungal), irritants, or even allergies.
Symptoms and Signs
The symptoms you mentioned, such as peeling skin and the presence of a yellow, thick discharge, are indicative of an underlying issue that may require medical attention. The peeling of the foreskin can lead to discomfort, pain, and potential complications if not treated properly. The yellow discharge could suggest an infection, which is a common cause of balanitis.
Home Care
While you mentioned using iodine (Betadine) to clean the area, it’s essential to be cautious with antiseptics, as they can sometimes irritate the skin further. Here are some general home care tips you can follow:
1. Gentle Cleaning: Clean the area gently with warm water and mild soap. Avoid harsh soaps or scrubs that can irritate the skin.
2. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from scented products, lotions, or other potential irritants that could exacerbate the condition.
3. Moisturize: If the skin is dry, consider applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to help soothe the area. However, avoid applying anything that could cause irritation.
4. Avoid Sexual Activity: Until the condition improves, it’s advisable to avoid sexual activity to prevent further irritation or potential transmission of an infection.
When to See a Doctor
Although it can be embarrassing to seek medical help for this issue, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional, especially since the symptoms have persisted for several days. Here are some reasons to see a doctor:
1. Persistent Symptoms: If the peeling does not improve with home care or worsens, it’s essential to get a professional evaluation.
2. Signs of Infection: If you notice increased redness, swelling, pain, or if the discharge becomes more pronounced, these could be signs of an infection that requires medical treatment.
3. Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other dermatological issues may need to be ruled out.
4. Treatment Options: A healthcare provider can prescribe appropriate medications, such as antifungal or antibiotic creams, depending on the underlying cause of the peeling.
Conclusion
While it’s understandable to feel shy about discussing genital issues, healthcare providers are trained to handle such matters with professionalism and confidentiality. Seeking medical advice is the best course of action to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Ignoring the symptoms could lead to more severe complications, so don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing these issues early can lead to better outcomes.
