Exploring Options for Apex Gland Curettage in Taiwan: Costs and Clinics - Plastic Surgery

Endometrial curettage

Over a year ago, I underwent a glandular curettage procedure at a dermatology clinic in Keelung, but it did not eliminate the issue and there was no improvement.
I would like to inquire if neurosurgery departments perform this type of surgery, and if there are better hospitals in Taichung that offer this service.
Additionally, what is the approximate cost?

Dr. Luo Qihua reply Plastic Surgery

The unpleasant odor from both armpits is caused by the breakdown of apocrine gland secretions by bacteria.
Therefore, removing the apocrine glands should eliminate the odor.
Neurosurgeons use thoracoscopic techniques to ablate the sympathetic ganglia, primarily to treat palmar hyperhidrosis, but using this method to reduce underarm sweating and consequently the odor may not be very effective.
Most plastic surgeons still prefer traditional surgical methods, where an incision is made in the area of the axillary hair, allowing for the complete removal of the apocrine glands, followed by direct closure of the skin, which yields excellent results.

A more complicated aspect is that patients must limit arm elevation for one week to ensure proper healing of the skin.
If there is localized skin necrosis, wound care may need to be extended for three to four weeks, and scarring may be more pronounced (though most patients have satisfactory wound healing).
The apocrine gland excision technique developed at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Keelung has the advantage of smaller incisions, and some patients have reported good results.
However, if your results are not satisfactory, it may be due to incomplete removal in certain areas.

Essentially, the locations of the apocrine glands and hair follicles are very close together.
Therefore, after apocrine gland excision, the axillary hair should become sparse.
The surgical outcome is closely related to the surgeon's skill, so it is advisable to gather more information, preferably through referrals from other patients who have undergone the treatment.
The cost ranges from NT$20,000 to NT$35,000.
Good luck.

When considering options for apex gland curettage, particularly in Taiwan, it is essential to understand the context of the procedure, its effectiveness, and the available medical facilities. Apex gland curettage, often referred to in the context of treating conditions related to the prostate or other glandular tissues, may not be a standard term in medical practice. However, it seems you are referring to a procedure aimed at addressing issues related to glandular tissues, possibly in the context of prostate health or similar conditions.

In Taiwan, various medical facilities offer treatments for prostate issues, including surgical options. The Da Vinci robotic surgery, for instance, is a minimally invasive surgical technique that has gained popularity for prostate cancer treatment. This method allows for precise removal of the prostate while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues, which can lead to quicker recovery times and fewer complications compared to traditional open surgery.

If you are considering surgical options, it is crucial to consult with a urologist or a specialist in prostate health. They can provide a thorough evaluation of your condition, discuss the potential benefits and risks of surgery, and explore alternative treatments such as active surveillance or other non-invasive methods.
In terms of costs, the price of surgery can vary significantly based on the hospital, the complexity of the procedure, and whether robotic assistance is used. Generally, robotic surgeries tend to be more expensive than traditional methods due to the technology involved. In Taiwan, the costs for such procedures can range from NT$200,000 to NT$600,000 or more, depending on the specifics of the case and the hospital's pricing structure. It is advisable to check with specific hospitals in Taichung or other cities for detailed pricing and insurance coverage options.

Regarding clinics or hospitals in Taichung that perform such procedures, you may consider reputable institutions such as Taichung Veterans General Hospital or China Medical University Hospital. These facilities are known for their advanced medical technologies and experienced surgical teams. It is recommended to schedule consultations with specialists at these hospitals to discuss your condition and treatment options in detail.

In conclusion, exploring options for apex gland curettage or related procedures in Taiwan involves understanding the available surgical techniques, consulting with qualified specialists, and considering the financial aspects of treatment. It is essential to have open discussions with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action tailored to your specific health needs.
