Macular degeneration issues?
Hello, doctor.
I have floaters in my vision, and recently I used the Amsler grid for self-examination.
I noticed that while the lines are not distorted or bent, they seem to be slightly irregular.
Currently, I do not see any bending in physical objects.
What is the likelihood that I have any pathological changes? If I need to see a retinal specialist, where should I go for a consultation in Tainan?
Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/27
Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello Lin: For macular degeneration, you can visit hospitals with a retina department, such as Chi Mei Medical Center or National Cheng Kung University Hospital.
If you experience any distortion in your vision, you should first consult an ophthalmologist, who may refer you to a nearby specialist if necessary.
The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Please note that online responses are for reference only; it is essential to seek medical care at a healthcare facility when needed.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.

More Info
Macular degeneration, particularly age-related macular degeneration (AMD), is a progressive eye condition that affects the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Symptoms can vary, but common early signs include blurred or distorted vision, difficulty seeing in low light, and the presence of dark or empty areas in your central vision. The condition can lead to significant vision loss if not monitored and managed properly.
In your case, the presence of floaters (known as "myodesopsia") and your observations using the Amsler grid are important indicators to consider. While the Amsler grid is a useful tool for self-monitoring, it is not a definitive diagnostic method. The fact that you notice slight distortions in straight lines could suggest early changes in your macula, but it does not confirm the presence of macular degeneration or any other specific pathology.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a retina specialist for a comprehensive evaluation. They can perform detailed examinations, including optical coherence tomography (OCT), which provides cross-sectional images of the retina, allowing for the assessment of any structural changes. Additionally, a fluorescein angiography may be conducted to evaluate blood flow in the retina and identify any abnormal blood vessels that could indicate wet AMD.
In terms of where to seek treatment in Tainan, you have several options. Major hospitals and eye clinics typically have retina specialists. You might consider visiting Tainan Municipal Hospital or other reputable eye care centers in the area. It is essential to ensure that the facility has the necessary diagnostic equipment and experienced specialists to provide a thorough evaluation and appropriate management.
As for the risk of developing macular degeneration, several factors can contribute to its progression, including age, genetics, smoking, and cardiovascular health. While you may not currently exhibit significant symptoms, regular monitoring is crucial, especially if you have risk factors. Lifestyle modifications, such as maintaining a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, managing blood pressure, and avoiding smoking, can also play a role in reducing the risk of progression.
In summary, while your current symptoms may not definitively indicate macular degeneration, they warrant further investigation by a specialist. Early detection and intervention are key to managing any potential vision-threatening conditions effectively. Regular eye exams and monitoring your vision changes will help ensure that any issues are addressed promptly.
