Pregnancy test results
Doctor, I apologize for the interruption.
My last menstrual period started on January 7, 2016, and prior to that, my cycles were around the beginning of the month, typically varying by about a week.
Subsequently, around January 28, 2016, I experienced postcoital bleeding without any known cause.
I consulted a physician, and my next period came on February 6-7 and then stopped, so it was likely my menstrual cycle.
Previously, in late November 2014, I had a chocolate cyst excised, measuring 5 cm on both sides.
I used to experience severe dysmenorrhea and vomiting.
After the surgery, I have not had any recurrence, and I have been under follow-up care, with the most recent check-up being at the end of December, which was normal.
I have been taking Diane for about eight months.
I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in my early teens, and the doctor prescribed YAZ and Diane for three months and six months, respectively.
However, I struggled with weight control and resorted to unhealthy methods.
My primary physician advised me to maintain my weight around 52 kg.
To avoid reprimand during follow-up visits, I started taking Eltroxin 100 mg (QD) at the end of 2015.
Initially, I experienced increased metabolism, arrhythmia, and sudden hunger, leading me to take more than prescribed.
I also took appetite-suppressing herbal medicine (ma huang, laxatives, appetite suppressants) at a high dosage, along with Fluoxetine, starting at 1 capsule BID-TID, increasing to 3 capsules BID-TID later on.
I lost weight within three months, but later experienced severe tremors, insomnia, and arrhythmia, prompting me to stop the medication around mid-February.
Currently, on February 17, 18, and 20, I had sexual intercourse, with one instance of ejaculation inside.
Today (March 1), I took a pregnancy test using midstream urine, and initially, there was only one line, but later a faint second line appeared.
After ten minutes, the second line remained faint but was more noticeable.
I purchased two more test kits, and this time the second line appeared more quickly, but it was still very faint.
Could you please advise if this indicates pregnancy? What is the likelihood? Also, could the medications I took during this period affect the pregnancy test results? Thank you, doctor!

When interpreting pregnancy test results, especially when faint lines are involved, it’s essential to understand the biology of conception, the timing of ovulation, and the sensitivity of the pregnancy test being used.
In your case, you mentioned that you had a menstrual cycle that started on January 7 and had sexual intercourse around February 17-20, with one instance of internal ejaculation. You took a pregnancy test on March 1, using midstream urine, and observed a faint second line. The appearance of a faint line can be confusing, and it’s important to consider several factors.
Firstly, pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. Typically, hCG levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy, doubling approximately every 48 to 72 hours. A faint line on a pregnancy test can indicate low levels of hCG, which may suggest early pregnancy. However, it can also result from testing too early, which is common if the test is taken before a missed period.
Given that you had sexual intercourse around the time of ovulation, there is a possibility of pregnancy. However, the timing of your test is crucial. If you tested too early, the hCG levels may not have risen enough to produce a strong positive result. It’s generally recommended to wait until at least the first day of a missed period for the most accurate results. Since your menstrual cycle appears to be irregular, it might be beneficial to wait a few days and retest, preferably with first-morning urine, which is more concentrated and can provide a clearer result.
Regarding the medications you mentioned, such as Eltroxin (used for thyroid hormone replacement) and Fluoxetine (an antidepressant), these typically do not interfere with the accuracy of a home pregnancy test. However, it’s always wise to consult with your healthcare provider about any medications you are taking, especially when trying to conceive or if you suspect pregnancy.
In summary, a faint line on a pregnancy test can indicate pregnancy, but it’s essential to consider the timing of the test and the sensitivity of the test used. If you continue to see faint lines, or if your period does not arrive, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can provide a definitive answer regarding pregnancy. Additionally, if you have concerns about your menstrual cycle, weight management, or the effects of medications, discussing these with your doctor can help you navigate your reproductive health more effectively.
