Granuloma near the nipple

Hello! I have had a small lump next to my right nipple since I was young, but I'm not sure what it is.
Recently, while showering, it suddenly became painful and itchy, and I noticed it seems to have turned red, resembling a granuloma.
It also hurts when touched.
What could this condition be?

Xiao Gan, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/01

Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid

Dear Xiao Gan: Most of these are skin cysts caused by the obstruction of skin glands.
They are not likely to undergo malignant transformation, but they can easily become infected.
If there is redness, swelling, pain, or if they persist or enlarge, a clinic examination is necessary.

When it comes to painful and red growths near the nipple, there are several potential causes that could explain your symptoms. It’s important to approach this situation with care, as changes in the breast area can sometimes indicate underlying health issues that may require medical attention.

Firstly, the growth you describe could be a benign condition such as a sebaceous cyst, which is a small lump beneath the skin that can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and redness. These cysts are generally harmless but can become uncomfortable if they become infected. Another possibility is a fibroadenoma, which is a non-cancerous tumor made up of glandular and connective tissue. These can also be painful and may change in size or sensitivity due to hormonal fluctuations.

Another potential cause is a condition known as mastitis, which is an infection of the breast tissue that results in breast pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. Mastitis is more common in breastfeeding women but can occur in anyone. It often requires antibiotic treatment, especially if there are signs of infection.

Additionally, the growth could be a sign of a dermatological issue, such as a skin infection or an allergic reaction. Conditions like eczema or contact dermatitis can cause localized redness, itching, and pain, particularly if there has been recent exposure to irritants or allergens.

Given that you have noticed changes in the growth, such as increased pain and redness, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to better understand the nature of the growth. They may also take a biopsy if there is any concern about the possibility of cancerous changes.

In terms of self-care while you await your appointment, it is advisable to keep the area clean and avoid any harsh soaps or irritants that could exacerbate the condition. If you experience significant pain or if the area becomes increasingly red or swollen, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical care.

In conclusion, while there are several benign explanations for the painful and red growth near your nipple, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Early intervention can help address any potential issues before they escalate. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, so don’t hesitate to reach out to a medical professional for guidance.
