Nasal allergy surgery
I have severe nasal allergies (itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion) almost year-round, and I don't want to take medication every day anymore.
I have undergone laser treatment to remove nasal polyps, but the allergies returned after about a year.
I would like to know if there are any treatment methods to alleviate allergies, such as desensitization therapy or new surgical options.
Are these only available at major hospitals? Thank you!

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello: Currently, the main treatment remains focused on medication and nasal sprays, which are generally quite effective in controlling symptoms.
Nasal laser treatment primarily aims to alleviate nasal congestion.
Allergen desensitization therapy is currently less commonly performed in hospitals due to its variable effectiveness and the need for a prolonged duration to see improvement.
It is advisable to consult with a physician at a medical center for further evaluation.
Wishing you peace and good health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Chronic nasal allergies, often manifesting as symptoms like itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion, can significantly impact one's quality of life. While medications such as antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids are commonly used to manage these symptoms, many patients seek alternatives to daily medication, especially when they experience recurrent issues after surgical interventions like laser surgery for nasal polyps.
Effective Treatments for Chronic Nasal Allergies
1. Allergen Avoidance: The first step in managing chronic nasal allergies is to identify and avoid allergens. This may involve lifestyle changes such as using air purifiers, keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, and regularly cleaning to reduce dust mites and pet dander.
2. Allergy Testing: Consulting with an allergist for comprehensive allergy testing can help identify specific triggers. Once identified, targeted avoidance strategies can be implemented.
3. Immunotherapy: One of the most effective long-term treatments for chronic nasal allergies is allergen immunotherapy, commonly known as allergy shots or sublingual tablets. This treatment involves gradually exposing the patient to increasing amounts of the allergen, which can help desensitize the immune system over time. Immunotherapy can provide lasting relief even after the treatment has ended, making it a viable option for those looking to reduce their reliance on medications.
4. Nasal Corticosteroid Sprays: While you mentioned wanting to avoid daily medication, nasal corticosteroids are among the most effective treatments for nasal allergies. They reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and can be used on a regular basis to manage symptoms effectively. Newer formulations are designed for long-term use with minimal side effects.
5. Biologic Therapies: For patients with severe allergic rhinitis, biologic medications such as omalizumab (Xolair) may be considered. These medications target specific pathways in the immune response and can provide significant relief for those who do not respond well to traditional therapies.
6. Surgical Options: While you have already undergone laser surgery for nasal polyps, there are other surgical interventions that may be considered if symptoms persist. These include:
- Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: This procedure can help clear blocked sinuses and improve drainage, which may alleviate symptoms associated with chronic nasal allergies.
- Radiofrequency Ablation: This technique can reduce the size of the turbinates (structures inside the nose that can become enlarged and obstruct airflow) without the risks associated with more invasive surgeries.
7. Lifestyle Modifications: Incorporating lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy diet, regular exercise, and stress management techniques can also play a role in managing allergies. Stress can exacerbate allergic reactions, so practices like mindfulness, yoga, or therapy may be beneficial.
8. Alternative Therapies: Some patients find relief through alternative therapies such as acupuncture or herbal remedies. However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any alternative treatment to ensure safety and efficacy.
Conclusion
In summary, while surgery can provide relief for chronic nasal allergies, it is not always a permanent solution. A multifaceted approach that includes allergen avoidance, immunotherapy, and possibly biologic treatments may offer more sustainable relief. It is advisable to consult with an allergist or an ENT specialist who can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific symptoms and medical history. Many of these treatments are available at larger medical centers, but some may also be accessible at community clinics or specialized allergy practices. Always discuss the potential benefits and risks of any treatment with your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your situation.
