Is it possible to get pregnant this way?

Hello doctor, my girlfriend and I had our first sexual intercourse in December of last year, and since then, we have had approximately eight encounters by early March, always using condoms.
We did not check for any damage to the condoms during intercourse, but we did check for any semen leakage, and there was none in all eight instances.
However, my girlfriend has been experiencing continuous lower abdominal pain since February 17, and her condition has not improved.
She also has a poor appetite and a slightly elevated temperature.
Is there a possibility of pregnancy?

Mr. Lin, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/02

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, you cannot rely on the safe period; it is better to take contraceptive measures beforehand during sexual activity.
If you still experience discomfort, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to the possibility of pregnancy despite using condoms, it's important to understand both the effectiveness of condoms and the signs and symptoms that may indicate pregnancy. Condoms, when used correctly and consistently, are about 98% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, this effectiveness can be compromised if the condom breaks, slips off, or is used incorrectly.
In your case, you mentioned that you and your girlfriend have had multiple sexual encounters since December, and you used condoms each time without checking for damage. While it sounds like you were careful, it's still possible for a condom to fail without you noticing. If there was any leakage or breakage, there could be a risk of pregnancy.

The symptoms your girlfriend is experiencing—lower abdominal pain, decreased appetite, and slightly elevated body temperature—can be indicative of several conditions, including early pregnancy. However, these symptoms can also be related to other factors such as hormonal changes, stress, or even an infection. It's important to note that the absence of a menstrual period is one of the more definitive signs of pregnancy, so if her period is late, that would warrant further investigation.

To determine if your girlfriend is pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. For the most accurate results, it's best to take the test after a missed period. If the test is positive, it would be advisable for her to see a healthcare provider for confirmation and to discuss her options moving forward.

If your girlfriend is indeed pregnant, there are several factors to consider, including her age, health, and personal circumstances. If she is underage, as mentioned in previous queries, there may be legal implications regarding parental consent for medical procedures, including abortion. It's crucial to approach this situation with care and sensitivity, ensuring that she feels supported in whatever decision she makes.

In terms of options, if the pregnancy is confirmed and she wishes to terminate it, there are generally two methods available: medication (medical abortion) and surgical procedures. Medical abortion is typically available up to 10 weeks into the pregnancy and involves taking medication to induce a miscarriage. Surgical options may be considered for pregnancies beyond this timeframe. It's essential to consult with a healthcare professional to understand the best course of action based on her specific situation.

Lastly, if there are concerns about confidentiality or family involvement, many clinics offer services that respect patient privacy. It's important for her to seek care from a trusted healthcare provider who can guide her through this process while ensuring her safety and well-being.

In summary, while the use of condoms significantly reduces the risk of pregnancy, it is not foolproof. If your girlfriend is experiencing symptoms and her period is late, taking a pregnancy test is the next logical step. Regardless of the outcome, open communication and support will be vital as you both navigate this situation together.
