About corneal scarring?
Hello, I would like to ask about my condition.
Recently, my right eye has been seeing things blurry.
I visited an ophthalmologist yesterday, and he said I have a scar on my cornea, which is causing my right eye to have astigmatism of 4.75 diopters, while my left eye has a difference of 4.00 diopters.
I cannot get a higher prescription at this point, and this is my current situation.
I would like to know if my right eye's condition will worsen, or is the worst-case scenario just that I will continue to see things blurry?
Mi Mi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/03
Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello, Mimi: If the scar is old, it may not change and will remain as it is.
However, if it is a recent occurrence, there may still be changes, so please continue to observe it.
Unfortunately, a detailed diagnosis cannot be made based on your description, so I recommend that you visit an ophthalmologist in person for a better explanation.
The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Please note that online responses can only serve as a reference; if necessary, you should seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist you.

Corneal scarring can significantly impact vision, and it appears that you are experiencing some of the effects associated with this condition. When the cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye, becomes scarred, it can lead to various visual disturbances, including blurriness, distortion, and increased sensitivity to light. In your case, the presence of a corneal scar is contributing to your astigmatism, which is why you are experiencing a difference in vision between your two eyes.
Corneal scars can result from various causes, including trauma, infections, or prolonged inflammation. The severity and location of the scar on the cornea play a crucial role in determining the extent of visual impairment. If the scar is located in the central part of the cornea, it is more likely to cause significant vision problems compared to a scar located at the periphery.
Regarding your concern about whether your right eye's condition will worsen, it is essential to understand that corneal scarring can stabilize over time, especially if the underlying cause of the scarring has been addressed. However, if the scar is due to an ongoing issue, such as an infection or inflammation, there is a risk that it could worsen, leading to further vision impairment. Regular follow-ups with your eye care professional are crucial to monitor the condition of your cornea and to ensure that any potential complications are addressed promptly.
In terms of treatment options, there are several avenues you might explore. If the scarring is significant and affecting your quality of life, your eye doctor may discuss options such as:
1. Contact Lenses: Specialized contact lenses, such as scleral lenses, can help improve vision by creating a smooth surface over the irregular cornea. These lenses can provide comfort and better visual acuity.
2. Corneal Transplant: In cases of severe scarring where vision cannot be adequately corrected with glasses or contact lenses, a corneal transplant may be considered. This procedure involves replacing the damaged cornea with healthy donor tissue.
3. Medications: If inflammation is contributing to your symptoms, anti-inflammatory medications or corticosteroids may be prescribed to help reduce swelling and improve comfort.
4. Vision Rehabilitation: Working with a vision rehabilitation specialist can help you adapt to changes in your vision and learn strategies to cope with visual impairment.
It is also important to maintain good eye hygiene and protect your eyes from further injury. Avoid rubbing your eyes, and wear protective eyewear during activities that could pose a risk to your eyes.
In conclusion, while corneal scarring can lead to persistent visual disturbances, the progression of your condition will depend on various factors, including the underlying cause of the scarring and your overall eye health. Regular check-ups with your eye care provider will be essential in managing your condition and exploring potential treatment options to improve your vision. If you have any concerns about the stability of your condition or the effectiveness of your current treatment, do not hesitate to reach out to your eye doctor for further evaluation and guidance.
