Delayed menstruation?
Hello Doctor, I had sexual intercourse on February 17 without proper protection, using the withdrawal method.
On February 19, I took an emergency contraceptive pill (single-dose).
My menstrual cycle is 28 days, with my period starting on February 1 and ending on February 5.
According to my records, my expected period for February was on the 29th, but it did not arrive.
That evening, I bought a pregnancy test, and the result showed one line.
Today is March 3, and my period still has not come.
I would like to ask the doctor: Am I pregnant? Should I buy another pregnancy test to check, or should I wait for my period? If it is delayed by more than a week, should I go to a gynecologist for an examination? Thank you.

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy since the contraceptive method you used is not completely effective.
I recommend that if your period is a week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Chang.

More Info
Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding delayed menstruation and the possibility of pregnancy. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down your situation and discuss the next steps.
You mentioned that you had unprotected intercourse on February 17 and subsequently took an emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) on February 19. This is an important step, as ECPs are designed to prevent pregnancy when taken within a specific time frame after unprotected sex. Since your menstrual cycle is typically 28 days, your expected period would have been around February 29. However, since you have not yet experienced your period, it is understandable that you are feeling anxious about the possibility of being pregnant.
The first thing to note is that emergency contraceptive pills can sometimes cause changes in your menstrual cycle. It is not uncommon for women to experience a delay in their next period after taking ECPs, as these medications can alter hormonal levels temporarily. This means that even if you are not pregnant, your period may be delayed due to the hormonal changes induced by the ECP.
You mentioned that you took a home pregnancy test on February 29, which returned a negative result (one line). This is a good initial step, but it is important to remember that home pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. Since your period is now a few days late, it may be beneficial to take another pregnancy test to confirm the results. If you choose to do this, make sure to follow the instructions carefully for the most accurate result.
If the second test is also negative and your period still does not arrive, it would be advisable to wait a few more days. If your period does not start within a week of the expected date, you should schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider or a gynecologist for further evaluation. They may perform a blood test, which is more sensitive than a home pregnancy test, and can provide a definitive answer regarding pregnancy.
In the meantime, it is essential to take care of your overall health. Ensure you are eating well, staying hydrated, and managing any stress you may be experiencing due to this uncertainty. Stress can also impact your menstrual cycle, so finding ways to relax and manage anxiety is beneficial.
In summary, here are the recommended steps:
1. Consider taking another home pregnancy test, especially if it has been a few days since your last test.
2. If the test is negative and your period does not arrive within a week of the expected date, schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider.
3. Monitor your health and manage stress during this waiting period.
Remember, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about your reproductive health or if you experience any unusual symptoms. They can provide personalized advice and support based on your specific situation. Wishing you the best, and I hope you find clarity soon!
