Stomach pain and nausea?

Hello Dr.
Liao, yesterday while I was in the car, I suddenly experienced dizziness and stomach pain (a little below the left rib cage) and felt nauseous.
When I got home, I thought that taking a nap would help, but I was in a light sleep state from 10 PM to 3 AM.

When experiencing sudden stomach pain and nausea, especially if accompanied by dizziness, it is crucial to understand the potential underlying causes and when to seek medical help. Based on the symptoms you've described—sudden onset of pain located under the left rib, nausea, and prolonged shallow sleep—there are several considerations to keep in mind.

Firstly, the location of the pain can provide insights into possible conditions. Pain under the left rib can be associated with various gastrointestinal issues, including gastritis, peptic ulcers, or even conditions related to the spleen or pancreas. Given that you also experienced dizziness and nausea, it’s important to consider whether these symptoms could be related to a more systemic issue, such as dehydration, low blood sugar, or even anxiety.

In terms of gastrointestinal conditions, both gastritis and peptic ulcers can cause significant discomfort. Gastritis, which is inflammation of the stomach lining, can lead to pain, nausea, and vomiting. Peptic ulcers, which are sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum), can also cause similar symptoms. If you have a history of these conditions, or if you have been under stress or taking medications that could irritate your stomach (like NSAIDs), these could be contributing factors.

The fact that you experienced dizziness alongside your stomach pain is particularly concerning. Dizziness can be a sign of several issues, including dehydration, which can occur if you are not eating or drinking adequately, especially if you are feeling nauseous. Additionally, if you have been under significant stress or have experienced a recent emotional event, this could also contribute to your symptoms.

When to seek medical help is a critical question. You should consider seeking immediate medical attention if:
1. The pain is severe and persistent.

2. You experience additional symptoms such as fever, vomiting blood, or black stools, which could indicate bleeding.

3. You feel faint or have significant dizziness that affects your ability to stand or walk.

4. Your symptoms do not improve after a few hours of rest or if they worsen.

In the meantime, there are some self-care measures you can take. Staying hydrated is essential, so try to sip on clear fluids, especially if you have been unable to eat. Avoiding spicy, fatty, or acidic foods can also help reduce irritation to your stomach. If you have over-the-counter medications like antacids, they may provide temporary relief, but they should not replace a consultation with a healthcare provider if symptoms persist.

In summary, while some stomach pain and nausea can be attributed to benign causes, the combination of symptoms you are experiencing warrants careful consideration. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. Always prioritize your health and well-being, especially when experiencing new or concerning symptoms.
