Pain in the center of the nipple?
I have a hard spot in the middle of my nipple.
It doesn't hurt when I don't press on it, but it does hurt when I do.
Could it be breast cancer? I don't want my parents to know.
What is the most likely cause?

Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid
Dear Master Yi: Gynecomastia is mostly seen in males and can sometimes present with tenderness similar to that experienced in females before menstruation.
This condition is often related to an imbalance of female hormones in the body.
It is advisable to reduce the intake of fried and high-fat foods, maintain a normal lifestyle, and observe the situation.
If there is an increase in size or if symptoms persist, follow-up in an outpatient clinic is recommended.

Nipple pain can be a concerning symptom, and it’s understandable to feel anxious about the possibility of serious conditions like breast cancer. However, it’s important to note that nipple pain can arise from a variety of causes, many of which are not related to cancer.
One common cause of nipple pain is hormonal changes, particularly those associated with the menstrual cycle. Many women experience breast tenderness or nipple pain due to fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels. This type of pain is often cyclical and may improve after menstruation.
Another potential cause of nipple pain is an infection or inflammation, such as mastitis or a breast abscess. These conditions can lead to localized pain, swelling, and sometimes discharge from the nipple. If you notice redness, warmth, or swelling in the area, it’s important to seek medical attention.
Additionally, conditions like duct ectasia, where a milk duct beneath the nipple dilates and fills with fluid, can also cause discomfort. This condition is more common in women who are nearing menopause. Other benign conditions, such as fibrocystic breast changes, can also lead to nipple pain.
In some cases, nipple pain can be associated with skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, which can cause irritation and discomfort. If you have a history of skin issues, this could be a contributing factor.
While breast cancer can present with nipple pain, it is typically accompanied by other symptoms, such as a noticeable lump in the breast, changes in breast shape or size, or unusual discharge from the nipple. If you are experiencing persistent pain, especially if it is localized and associated with a hard area, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
It’s understandable to want to keep your concerns private, especially from family members. However, seeking medical advice is essential for your health and peace of mind. A healthcare provider can perform a clinical breast exam and may recommend imaging studies, such as a mammogram or ultrasound, to rule out any serious conditions.
In summary, while nipple pain can be alarming, it is often due to benign causes. However, if the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it is vital to seek medical attention. Early evaluation and diagnosis can provide reassurance and appropriate management, ensuring that any potential issues are addressed promptly. Remember, your health is a priority, and seeking help is a proactive step in taking care of yourself.
