How to prevent pregnancy?

Hello, my girlfriend and I had unprotected intercourse almost two weeks ago.
We didn't use a condom or any contraceptive measures, nor did we take emergency contraception, but I did not ejaculate, only released pre-ejaculate fluid.
Her menstrual cycle usually starts around the 3rd or 4th of each month, and she hasn't gotten her period yet.
We are very worried that she might be pregnant due to the pre-ejaculate fluid.
If that is the case, we are not ready to become parents so soon.
Are there any methods to prevent this? Thank you.

Zhu Zhu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/07

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, there is still a chance.
It's not advisable to rely on the safe period; it's better to take preventive measures for contraception before engaging in sexual activity.
If your period is more than a week late, it's recommended to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

When it comes to preventing pregnancy after unprotected intercourse, especially when ejaculation did not occur, it's important to understand the risks and options available. Pre-ejaculate fluid, or pre-cum, can contain sperm, and while the likelihood of pregnancy from this fluid is lower than from ejaculate, it is still a possibility. Given that your girlfriend's menstrual cycle is typically around the 3rd or 4th of each month and she has not yet had her period, it is understandable that you both are feeling anxious about the possibility of pregnancy.

Understanding the Risks
1. Timing of Ovulation: The risk of pregnancy is highest during the ovulation period, which typically occurs about 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period. If your girlfriend's cycle is regular, you can estimate her ovulation window. However, cycles can vary, and factors such as stress, illness, or changes in routine can affect ovulation timing.

2. Sperm Viability: Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days. Therefore, if intercourse occurred close to the time of ovulation, there is a higher chance of pregnancy, even if ejaculation did not occur.

What to Do Now
1. Wait for the Period: If her period does not arrive within a week or so of its expected date, it would be advisable for her to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are generally reliable and can provide peace of mind.

2. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If there are concerns about potential pregnancy or if she experiences unusual symptoms (like cramping or spotting), consulting a healthcare provider can provide clarity and guidance.

Preventive Measures for the Future
1. Emergency Contraception: If you are still within the window (typically up to 72-120 hours after unprotected intercourse), emergency contraception (like Plan B or Ella) can be an option. These pills are most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex.

2. Regular Contraceptive Methods: For future sexual encounters, consider discussing and implementing regular contraceptive methods. Options include:
- Condoms: They provide a barrier that prevents sperm from entering the uterus and also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

- Birth Control Pills: These hormonal methods can regulate menstrual cycles and prevent ovulation.

- IUDs: Intrauterine devices can provide long-term contraception and are highly effective.

- Implants: Hormonal implants can prevent ovulation for several years.

3. Communication: It’s crucial to have open discussions with your partner about contraception and sexual health. Understanding each other's preferences and concerns can help in making informed decisions.

Conclusion
While the anxiety surrounding the possibility of pregnancy is understandable, it is important to take proactive steps. If your girlfriend's period is delayed, a pregnancy test can provide clarity. For future encounters, consider reliable contraceptive methods to prevent unintended pregnancies. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and to address any specific health concerns.
