Red, swollen, itchy nipples that may be painful?

In recent days, I'm not sure if it's the weather causing my skin to dry out or something else, but one side of my nipple is very itchy, painful to the touch, and has become red and swollen.
What could these symptoms indicate? Could it be breast cancer?

Xiao Jie, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/08

Dear Miss: The symptoms are more similar to eczema.
If the symptoms persist, you may visit a dermatologist or a breast clinic for treatment.

Itchy, red, and swollen nipples can be concerning symptoms, and it's understandable to worry about potential serious conditions such as breast cancer. However, there are several possible explanations for these symptoms that are not related to cancer.
One common cause of itchy and swollen nipples is dermatitis, which can occur due to various factors, including dry skin, allergic reactions, or irritants. In colder and drier climates, skin can become dehydrated, leading to irritation and inflammation. This can manifest as redness, itching, and swelling. Contact dermatitis, which occurs when the skin reacts to a substance it has come into contact with (such as soaps, lotions, or fabrics), can also cause similar symptoms.

Another possibility is a condition known as Paget's disease of the nipple, which is a rare form of breast cancer that typically presents with changes in the skin of the nipple and areola, including redness, flaking, and itching. However, this condition is often accompanied by other signs, such as a lump in the breast or discharge from the nipple. If you are experiencing only localized symptoms without any other concerning signs, it is less likely to be Paget's disease.

Infections, such as a yeast infection or bacterial infection, can also cause redness, swelling, and itching of the nipple area. These infections can occur due to moisture accumulation, especially if the area is not kept dry, or if there is a break in the skin that allows bacteria or yeast to enter.

If you are experiencing pain along with the itching and swelling, it could indicate an infection or a more serious inflammatory condition. In such cases, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination, take a detailed history, and possibly order tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

In terms of management, if the symptoms are due to dryness or dermatitis, applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer can help alleviate the dryness and irritation. Avoiding known irritants and allergens is also crucial. If an infection is suspected, your doctor may prescribe topical or oral medications to treat it.

It is important to monitor your symptoms closely. If the redness, swelling, or itching worsens, or if you notice any new symptoms such as discharge, lumps, or persistent pain, you should consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to managing any potential issues effectively.

In summary, while itchy, red, and swollen nipples can be alarming, they are often due to benign conditions such as dermatitis or infections rather than breast cancer. However, it is always best to err on the side of caution and seek medical advice to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
