The area around the wisdom tooth extraction site feels tight and slightly painful?
I would like to ask if it is normal to feel tightness and mild pain at the wound site after having my stitches removed at the clinic last Sunday, especially when making large movements in the following days.
Additionally, after having my wisdom teeth extracted, the gum near my tongue feels hard and painful when pressed, and it seems slightly swollen and sharper compared to the right side.
Should I have this checked by a doctor?

In the above situation, if there is significant movement of the mouth or if something hard is bitten, pain may still occur.
Additionally, if the gingiva on the tongue side is still inflamed, applying pressure will also be painful, and it may appear more swollen.
If the pain persists, it is advisable to return to the clinic for a doctor's examination to check for any signs of inflammation or infection at the wound site.

More Info
Experiencing tightness and mild pain after wisdom tooth extraction is not uncommon, especially in the days following the procedure. The healing process can vary significantly from person to person, and several factors can contribute to the sensations you're feeling.
When a wisdom tooth is extracted, the surrounding tissues, including the gums and bone, undergo significant trauma. This trauma can lead to inflammation, which is a natural part of the healing process. The tightness you feel may be due to swelling in the area, which can make the tissues feel more rigid. Additionally, the extraction site may be sensitive to movement, particularly if you engage in activities that involve opening your mouth wide or chewing.
The mild pain you describe, especially during large movements, can also be attributed to the healing process. After an extraction, the body works to repair the tissues, and this can sometimes result in discomfort as the nerves and muscles around the extraction site adjust. It’s important to remember that while some discomfort is normal, it should gradually decrease over time.
Regarding the hard area near your tongue and the slight swelling you mentioned, it is essential to monitor these symptoms. Post-operative swelling is common, but if you notice that the swelling is increasing or if the area feels particularly painful to the touch, it could indicate a potential complication, such as an infection or dry socket. A dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site becomes dislodged or dissolves before the wound has healed, exposing the underlying bone and nerves, which can lead to significant pain.
If the area feels sharp or pointed, it may be worth consulting your dentist or oral surgeon. They can assess the site to ensure that there are no fragments of the tooth left behind and that the healing process is proceeding as expected. It’s always better to err on the side of caution, especially if you have concerns about your recovery.
In summary, while some tightness and mild pain can be normal after wisdom tooth extraction, it is crucial to keep an eye on your symptoms. If you experience increasing pain, significant swelling, or any other unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for a follow-up examination. They can provide you with the best guidance and treatment options to ensure a smooth recovery.
