The secretions are yellow-green in color?
Hello Doctor: I have been troubled by my abnormal vaginal discharge for a long time, almost a year.
The discharge is yellow-green in color but has no odor! I am currently pregnant, but I had this issue even before I became pregnant.
I visited a gynecologist before, but there was no improvement! I am very worried that I might have cancer! However, my husband and I always use condoms during sexual intercourse.
There was one occasion when I used a sexual enhancement product, and some of it got into my vagina, but I removed it afterward.
I recall that this issue seemed to start around that time.
I saw a gynecologist who prescribed me a suppository, but it did not help! Thank you for your attentive response.

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
The response indicates that it is likely just vaginitis.
If previous treatments have not been effective, it may be advisable to consider transferring to a larger hospital for further examination and treatment.
Sincerely, Dr.
Lü Li-Zheng, Taoyuan Hospital.

More Info
Understanding yellow-green vaginal discharge during pregnancy can be concerning for many women, especially when it has persisted for an extended period. The color and consistency of vaginal discharge can provide important clues about underlying conditions, and it’s essential to differentiate between normal physiological changes and potential infections or other medical issues.
Causes of Yellow-Green Vaginal Discharge
1. Normal Physiological Changes: During pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations lead to increased vaginal secretions. This is primarily due to elevated estrogen levels, which can cause the vaginal walls to thicken and produce more mucus. While this discharge is typically clear or white, some women may notice a yellowish tint, which can be normal.
2. Infections: Yellow-green discharge can also indicate an infection. Common culprits include:
- Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): This condition occurs when there is an imbalance in the normal bacteria found in the vagina. It can lead to a fishy odor and yellowish discharge.
- Trichomoniasis: This sexually transmitted infection (STI) is caused by a parasite and can result in frothy, yellow-green discharge, often accompanied by itching and irritation.
- Yeast Infections: While typically associated with thick, white discharge, some women may experience a yellowish discharge with yeast infections, especially if there is irritation or inflammation.
3. Cervical Changes: During pregnancy, the cervix undergoes changes that can lead to increased discharge. If there is any inflammation or infection of the cervix (cervicitis), it may also contribute to the color and consistency of the discharge.
Concerns During Pregnancy
Given that you are currently pregnant, it’s understandable to be concerned about the potential impact of any discharge on your pregnancy. Here are some considerations:
- Infection Risks: Certain infections, if left untreated, can pose risks during pregnancy, including preterm labor or transmission to the baby during delivery. It’s crucial to address any signs of infection promptly.
- Cancer Concerns: While it’s natural to worry about serious conditions like cancer, yellow-green discharge is more commonly associated with infections rather than malignancies. However, if you have persistent symptoms or changes in your discharge, it’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Since you have a history of this discharge and are currently pregnant, it’s vital to consult with a healthcare provider who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology. They can perform necessary tests, such as a pelvic exam and cultures, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
2. Avoid Self-Medication: While it may be tempting to use over-the-counter treatments or home remedies, it’s essential to avoid self-medication, especially during pregnancy. Some treatments may not be safe for you or your baby.
3. Maintain Hygiene: Continue practicing good hygiene, but avoid douching or using scented products in the vaginal area, as these can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and lead to further irritation.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms, such as itching, burning, or unusual odor, and report these to your healthcare provider. This information can help in diagnosing the issue more accurately.
5. Discuss Sexual Activity: Since you mentioned using condoms during sexual activity, it’s good to maintain this practice to reduce the risk of STIs. However, if you have concerns about any products used during intercourse, discuss these with your provider.
In conclusion, while yellow-green discharge during pregnancy can be alarming, it is often manageable with appropriate medical care. It’s essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and concerns to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
